In June of 2018, Fortnite broke the record held for most concurrent Twitch viewers in a single stream. The record was previously held by Counter-Strike: GO with 1.026 million. Fortnite’s Celebrity Pro-AM stream held in June received 1.46 million viewers tuning in to watch these celebrities and popular streams duke it out.

The game has only grown larger since this event with its launch on both Nintendo Switch and Android devices. Fortnite still remains the number one game viewed on Twitch daily according to Twitch’s browse section. Other games like Dota 2, League of Legends, and PUBG have all had their time in the spotlight, but none can seem to break it of its current standings.

Other games have been released and will steal the Twitch spotlight for a day or two, but nothing has dethroned the king just yet. Will this game continue to remain number one or will another big release be able to take it down?

Fortnite isn’t only breaking records on the live streaming service Twitch, it’s also breaking records over on YouTube. In March it broke the record for most YouTube videos for a specific game in a month. In a tweet made by Ryan Watt, Global Head of Gaming at YouTube, he stated Fortnite did indeed break the record for most YouTube videos uploaded in a single month but did not specify exactly how many videos that was.

On top of that Superdata has said that YouTube users are watching close to 25 million hours of Fortnite a week. It is taking tremendous strides on both Twitch and YouTube. There is an abundance of content for this game spread throughout the internet as well. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are all also flooded with gameplay clips and screenshots.

Epic also teases the community prior to the launch of every new season with hints and riddles for them to figure out. Whenever this happens it sends the gaming world into a frenzy further pushing their social media dominance. Players are constantly posting videos and tweets with their latest theories on what will happen next, which is an incredibly smart way for Epic to keep their foothold on YouTube and social media.

When Fortnite launched on the Nintendo Switch PlayStation users quickly learned that their accounts could not be used on both systems. If their Epic Account was linked to PlayStation that’s where it would have to stay. This created quite a backlash because Microsoft was open to cross-play, but Sony had put their foot down.

In a June interview with The Verge Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said this: “On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that’s our belief.”

Fast forward to September, Fortnite is still one of the most talked about, streamed, and recorded games out there. Sony released a statement saying they are going to allow cross-play with Microsoft and Nintendo for Fortnite. Currently, no other game supports cross-play between all three of the major console manufacturers.

Epic made history by causing Sony to buckle on their stance and opening the floodgate for future games to try this out.

In the month of May, Fortnite brought in around $318 million in revenue. This was the highest revenue for any console game that month. Fortnite’s wacky skins, emotes, and gliders have caused a frenzy among the community who have been buying them all up as they are released. Cosmetic purchases are not a new thing in the industry, but the amount of money being made by Epic is unprecedented. Fortnite is proving that not only can the free-to-play model can be successful but be groundbreaking when done correctly.

With new additions to the item store daily and a new Battle Pass each season it is set to continue breaking its own records. Epic is raking in money hand over fist at this point, and show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
