E3 is only a few weeks away and gamers everywhere are speculating at what treats may be in store for us. Last year’s E3 was a great success with surprises for everyone, whether your platform of choice was the PS4, Xbox One, or PC. Bethesda announced the imminent release of Fallout 4, the Final Fantasy 7 remake was announced, and the Kickstarter for Shenmue 3 was unveiled.
As good as last year was, this year’s E3 looks like it could be even better, but what announcements would have us jumping out of our chairs and fist pumping the air? Join us as we count down ten announcements we’d most love to see at E3.
A New Rockstar Game
It has now been several years since Rockstar’s last game, Grand Theft Auto V, was released. Rockstar may have been regularly supporting the game with new content for GTA Online, but isn’t it about time for them to announce something new?
There have been many rumors lately which state that Rockstar has been working on a new Red Dead game, but nothing has been verified yet. Some fans have speculated that a long awaited sequel to Bully may be in the works, while others are hoping that Rockstar will announce single-player DLC for Grand Theft Auto V. Whatever the case, we’d love to see what Rockstar has in the pipeline.
New Consoles
Perhaps one of the most exciting new developments currently taking place in the gaming industry is the news that consoles are going to get powerful new upgrades. What started as a rumor has now been all but confirmed and it looks like both Sony and Microsoft are working on releasing new PlayStation 4s and Xbox Ones which will be able to perform better than what we have now.
Nintendo is also hard at work on its new console, codenamed the NX, and we can’t wait to see what it will be like and how it will improve on the unfortunate Wii U. Nintendo has stated that the NX will not appear at E3, but maybe they’re just bluffing. We can dream, right?
The Last Guardian
One of the highlights for many gamers last year was the re-announcement of The Last Guardian. Originally announced way back in 2009, The Last Guardian has been through development hell and this time last year, many people had written it off. Our jaws hit the floor when Sony opened their conference with a new gameplay video and the news that The Last Guardian was back on track.
Designer Fumito Ueda has brought the PlayStation some of its best games like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. The Last Guardian looks every bit as impressive and we’d love to get to see more of it at this year’s E3. A recent interview with Ueda also confirmed that the game is scheduled for a 2016 release, surely a place at E3 would help get gamers pumped?
The Elder Scrolls VI
Last year, Bethesda kicked off E3 with a bang when the studio announced the long awaited Fallout 4. No doubt Bethesda is still committed to providing DLC to Fallout 4, but surely some folk there are turning their attention to The Elder Scrolls VI.
We don’t expect to be playing The Elder Scrolls VI anytime soon, but wouldn’t it be awesome if we saw just a little tease of it. After all, a teaser trailer for Skyrim was released almost a year before the game would be released. Given how crazy the hype for Skyrim was, a little glimpse of the next installment in the franchise would certainly get us pumped for another visit to Tamriel.Â
A New Assassin’s Creed
Earlier this year, it was announced by Ubisoft that the Assassin’s Creed franchise would be having a little breather. After releasing a game annually for several years, it was clear that there was a risk of the series becoming stale. The series is by no means abandoned, the devs are just taking a break in order to go back to the drawing board and see how the series can continue to evolve with new technology and game engines.
Whilst we won’t be seeing a new Assassin’s Creed title released this year, that doesn’t mean we won’t see the next game get an official announcement. Showing a small teaser for the game at E3 would allow Ubisoft to make it clear to fans that the franchise isn’t dead, whilst giving the developers time to create a fresh new game. Just teasing a few details such as the time period and location the new game will be set in would be enough to have fans buzzing.
Kojima’s New Project
Since the release of Metal Gear Solid V, not to mention his departure from Konami, famed video game creator Hideo Kojima has clearly been hard at work. Over the past few months he’s joined forces with Sony, founded his own game studio, visited other studios around the world, and has teased fans with hints about his latest project. Kojima clearly has something big up his sleeve and we’re all very eager to know what it is.
Kojima has revealed several pieces of concept art for his new game and the Kojima Productions website features a lot of vague information that appears to relate to his new project. Kojima will obviously want to reveal his new game with a bang and E3 is the perfect opportunity to do so. Not only would a reveal at E3 give the game huge coverage, but it would also work to Sony’s favor in helping them in the console war against Microsoft. It’s really impossible to say if Kojima’s game is ready to be revealed, but it would certainly be a highlight if it is.
New Indie Titles
As much as we love Triple A games, there’s no doubting that indie games offer a breath of fresh air when you’re feeling fatigued by big blockbusters. Indie games may not feature the budget or size of Triple A games, but they are often more true to the creator’s vision, have more to say, and can often be more memorable.
Indie games such as Journey, Limbo, and Shovel Knight have proven that they can be every bit as important to gamers as the big titles. Last year’s E3 reminded us of that when we saw lots of great indie games including Unravel, Firewatch, and Cuphead. Many of the indie games shown at last year’s E3 have since been released to critical acclaim. It would be great if, at this year’s E3, indie games got at least as much attention as they did last year. The announcement of some cool looking indie games can be the icing on top of the delicious cake that is Triple A titles.
Destiny 2
Destiny was arguably the biggest game to be released in 2014 and the hype was unreal. Although the game sold incredibly well, some fans were a little disappointed at the lack of story and very uneven loot system. Regardless, Destiny has since been supported with several expansion packs and many gamers are still enjoying it today. It was announced in late 2014 that work on a sequel has begun and Bungie has since confirmed that the sequel is planned to be released in 2017.
It would seem like a missed opportunity for Bungie not to announce Destiny 2 at this year’s E3. Sure, if the game is released in late 2017, it could be announced next year, but that would leave little time for the game to be promoted. Given how much hype the last game got, it seems very likely that we’ll see Destiny 2 get a bombastic reveal at E3. Here’s hoping that the sequel contains all the great gameplay as well as a rich universe full of story and lore.
Kingdom Hearts III
The Kingdom Hearts series is beloved by many gamers and, although the third game was confirmed to be in development at E3 2013, fans were relieved and excited when a new gameplay trailer was shown last year. Showing off new enemies, gameplay mechanics, and beautiful graphics, the trailer got us truly pumped for a new Disney themed adventure.
A release window for the game still hasn’t been revealed but development still seems to be on track. It’s perfectly possible that we might get a new trailer, more gameplay, or even a release date at this year’s E3. Wouldn’t it be great to go on one last adventure with the old gang?
New IPs
As much as we love established franchises in gaming, it’s also great to get some fresh blood in the industry. The great thing about seeing a new IP announced is realizing how badly you wanted a game without even knowing it.
Last year’s E3 saw several new IPs announced including the Microsoft exclusive ReCore and the PlayStation 4 exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn. New IPs give developers the chance to create something totally new and allows gamers to get excited for a new world they’ve never seen before. Here’s hoping we get some new IPs announced this year.
So there you have it, five things we’re pumped about for this year’s E3. Are you hoping to see something we missed? Perhaps you’re hoping to see Ubisoft’s next Assassin’s Creed game, or maybe you’re hoping to get a look at Hideo Kojima’s new project. Let us know it the comments!
