Destiny 2, The Dawning 2017

Everything You Need to Know About Destiny 2: The Dawning

'Tis the season to spend some Silver.
This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

The holiday-themed Dawning event is back in Destiny 2, and it’s now live in the game, which means that Guardians can start participating in new PvP activities and obtain Dawning engrams. Here’s everything you need to know about the event this year.

How Long Is It Running?

The Dawning went live in Destiny 2 on Dec. 19, and the event will run until Jan. 9. This gives you just a little under a month to farm for those Dawning engrams. These new engrams can only be obtained by achieving a weekly Milestone challenge, or by purchasing them from Tess Everis at the Eververse shop in the Tower. The engrams come packed with new cosmetic items like armor, Sparrows, and ships. So if you want to give your Guardian an exclusive new look, this is the way to go.

During this time, the Tower will also be covered in snow, and you can actually have snowball fights with other Guardians in the social space. The snowball fights will also be available in Crucible, where you can weaken your enemies by hitting them with a snowball.

How to Start the Event?

Now that the event is live, you simply have to log into Destiny 2 and speak with Tess to obtain your first engram. After that, you’ll be directed to Ikora Rey, where she’ll give you a new Milestone to work towards to. The Milestone is called ‘Spreading Holiday Cheer,’ and once you complete all the objectives, you’ll be rewarded with more random cosmetic items. Not to mention, a chance of getting better Legendary gear as well if you’re trying to raise your Power level.

On the next page, we’ll have more detailed info on the new cosmetic gear available in the game, and how much they cost.

Cosmetic Items

As mentioned previously, the Eververse will be stocked with new cosmetic items that can be randomly obtained from Dawning engrams. You’ll get one for completing the new weekly Milestone, Spreading Holiday Cheer, which requires you to participate in the Mayhem Crucible playlist.

Alternatively, you can also speed up the process by buying engrams directly from Tess. Here’s what it’ll cost you:

  • 1 Dawning Engram – 200 Silver
  • 3 Dawning Engrams – 500 Silver
  • 5 Dawning Engrams – 800 Silver

If you’re new to Destiny 2, it’s worth mentioning that Silver serves as the game’s premium currency. Which means that you can’t simply earn them by completing in-game activities; you have to pay real money to get Silver, which can then be exchanged for more engrams. Essentially, you’ll have to shell out real dollars for the new cosmetic items if you don’t want to grind for them. The new armor pieces don’t offer statistical boosts, though, so there’s no worry of being comparatively weaker to another player in Crucible who’s opted to buy the new gear.

If the idea of Silver doesn’t appeal to you, it is also possible to buy some cosmetic items with Bright Dust instead. Bright Dust is another type of premium currency that can be earned in-game by dismantling items you got from Bright or Dawning engrams. For instance, if you receive duplicate items in your engrams, you can dismantle one of them to get Bright Dust. This can then be exchanged for select cosmetic items that Tess is currently selling.

At the moment, these are the items that are available for Bright Dust:

  • Holiday Cheer – 2,500 Bright Dust
  • Breath of Stars – 500 Bright Dust
  • Dulcinea Shell – 400 Bright Dust
  • Icecapade – 400 Bright Dust
  • Silver Dawning Lanterns – 450 Bright Dust
  • Winter Shaders Pack – 150 Bright Dust

As you can see, some of the more coveted items will require you to fork out even larger sums of Bright Dust. Given how difficult it is to grind up levels in Destiny 2 after hitting the level cap, you’ll need to spend a rather significant amount of time unlocking engrams and accumulating Bright Dust to buy these items.

That’s all you need to know about Destiny 2 and the new event for now. Be sure to check our wiki for more information on the game.
