We’ve been waiting for Owlboy to release for a long time, but now that it has, it could be perfect for the younger gamer. It is an old-school platformer, with a stunning pixel-art style, that oozes with charm. You explore the skies, taking on the dungeons and fighting a few enemies. Some of the dungeons and bosses may prove a little tough for those on the younger side, but the general gameplay is easy to grasp. The game’s narrative is also charming and engaging, and sees you play as Otus, who sets out on a journey to save his village after it is attacked by a band of pirates. Owlboy isn’t particularly combat heavy, focusing on the world and the story, so it could be the perfect indie game for anyone’s PlayStation 4, not just young gamers.

Fe

Much like Unravel before it, the game that prompted the EA Originals band, Fe is a unique platformer that offers a lot that could excite the younger gamer. The visual style, with a calm atmosphere and world that is littered with angled objects, is striking, the color palate signalling the theme and mood of the chapter. The platforming isn’t always perfect, although jumping between trees is a thrill, and there isn’t much of a coherent story to shout about, but the gameplay is generally engaging. The idea of connecting to the other animals through the medium of song is interesting and opens up some other avenues of exploration and the enemies are menacing, but not terrifying. The lack of direction may confuse some, but the gameplay itself is simple enough for any gamer to get the hang of.

De Blob 2

de Blob

De Blob 2 originally released during the last generation of consoles, finding success of the Nintendo Wii, but it has now made its way over to PlayStation 4. Following on from the DS version, De Blob 2’s story follows Prisma City’s general election, which is being rigged by a mysterious priest called Papa Blanc.

As was the case in the previous game, you control Blob, and you need to mix colors in order to paint objects in the world and bring life back to the city, which opens up areas you previously weren’t able to access. Blob is given missions, such as completing races and taking on enemies, by his friends in the Color Underground, so that it is easier to take back their city. The gameplay is very simple, the story is light-hearted and fun, and the focus on color makes it a visual treat, so De Blob 2 is a great choice for any young PlayStation 4 owner.

Moss

Now, Moss won’t be playable for everyone with a PlayStation 4 because it requires PlayStation VR. However, if you possess one of Sony’s expensive headsets, Moss is arguably the best kid-friendly release of 2018. Plunged into a fantasy, story-book world, you undertake the role of The Reader and take control of Quill as she heads out on an adventure. Quill is adorable, the third-person perspective is immersive due to the quality design of the world, and the platforming is simple but enjoyable. The story-book tone and the easy to grasp gameplay make it the perfect choice for younger gamers, but they might need some supervision due to it being a VR title. You don’t want any damage to be done to the expensive headset, after all.
