Shadow of the Colossus Remake
(PS4 – Feb. 6)
Best Games to Look Forward to in February 2018
Shadow of the Colossus is one of those games that really resonated with people when it originally released back in 2005 on the PS2. Since then, we’ve seen an HD remaster on the PS3 that addressed the unstable framerate which plagued the original release, as well as increasing its resolution. Still, fans have been clamoring for a full remake to bring this classic up to current generation standings. And that’s exactly what Bluepoint Studios has done.
The remake brings all of the serenity of this artistic adventure game, as well as its iconic Colossi-fighting action to the PS4. Get ready to revel in nostalgia, or experience it the best possible way for the first time. If you thought Agro’s majestic gallop across those sprawling green fields looked great on the PS2, just wait until you see it running at 4K on a PS4 Pro.
Though it still feels dated in some aspects, such as the way in which its camera and controls function, Shadow of the Colossus is still well-worth picking up whether it’s your first or fifth time embarking on this touching adventure.
Dynasty Warriors 9
(PC, PS4, Xbox One – Feb. 13)
Best Games to Look Forward to in February 2018
Sometimes, you just want to play a game that allows you to feel like an all-powerful badass. Dynasty Warriors has always been about finding a way to eliminate tons of enemies in as stylish and as fast a way as possible. Though the series has often seen players sprinting across large maps during missions, Dynasty Warriors 9 will be the first time it adopts an open world formula. One that will apparently take two hours of non-stop horseback travel to get from one side to the other.
The game features a massive roster of 90 characters (83 of which will be familiar faces to fans), and players will be able to freely modify the movesets of their favorite fighters so they handle and deal out the damage according to their preference. Dynasty Warriors 9 will also receive a handful of visual enhancements, including a day-night cycle and real-time weather effects.
If you’d been hoping Dynasty Warriors 9 would bring more significant changes than its predecessor, it doesn’t sound like you’ll be disappointed.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
(PC, PS4, Xbox One – Feb. 13)
Best Games to Look Forward to in February 2018
Kingdom Come: Deliverance looks like one of the meatier experiences releasing in February 2018. Taking place during the Holy Roman Empire period, players will find themselves right in the center of a civil war, with their village being raided by the opposing forces. As you may have guessed then, it’ll come down to you, the blacksmith’s son, to avenge the deaths of the fallen, while also pushing back and defeating the invading forces.
It’s not just the fact that Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a story-driven RPG that makes it such a massive experience, though. It’s the open-endedness of just about every element of the game that makes it so intriguing. You’re given the freedom to complete quests in a multitude of ways, each one offering a different outcome and affecting the way the world will react to you. It gives us Fable morality meter vibes, only a little more complex. Throw in ultra-realistic sword combat and a historically accurate narrative into the mix and you’ve got a recipe for potentially one of those boldest and most compelling video game experiences in 2018, let alone February.
Here’s hoping developer Warhorse Studios manages to deliver (I’m sorry) for its ambitious vision when it arrives on Feb. 13.
Secret of Mana
(PC, PS4, PS Vita – Feb. 15)
Best Games to Look Forward to in February 2018
Chances are if you haven’t played the SNES version of Secret of Mana, you’ve at least heard of the game. The original release back in 1993 has remained near and dear to many old-school JRP fans’ hearts over all of these years, and this remake for PC, PS4, and Vita aims to spruce up this classic with a number of convenient Quality of Life improvements set to make your adventuring that bit smoother.
Alongside an auto-save option and the inclusion of mini-maps to help you navigate your way around, the Secret of Mana remake also grants you greater control over your AI teammates through more command options. Hotkeys to help you easily switch up playstyles on the fly, and a spruced-up soundtrack to bring beloved classic scores to the modern day. Whether you missed out on Secret of Mana the first time around, or are just looking for another reason to slash away at some Specters, the remake is definitely one to keep your eye on in February 2018.
Bayonetta 1 & 2
(Switch – Feb. 16)
Best Games to Look Forward to in February 2018
Bayonetta and its sequel, the aptly named Bayonetta 2, aren’t exactly new releases, but they are new to the Nintendo Switch. Releasing this month ahead of the upcoming third entry in the series (also coming to Switch), the two titles will be the perfect way for newcomers to get acquainted with the sassy witch, and for veterans to take the action on-the-go with them all over again.
Aside from just being straight ports, Polygon also spotted that a number of new features for Bayonetta 2 were listed on the official site (which have since been deleted) to make this more than just a straight carbon copy. If you’re looking for something to satiate your need for fast-paced action on the Nintendo Switch, Bayonetta 1 & 2 should be toward the top of your wishlist in February 2018.
Fe
(PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One – Feb. 16)
Best Games to Look Forward to in February 2018
Fe isn’t the type of game we usually see from publisher EA. Sports titles and their major franchises tend to dominate its releases throughout the year, but Fe comes from Zoink Games as part of EA’s Originals lineup. Players will assume the role of an adorable fox as they explore a dark and mysterious Nordic forest. You’ll need to talk with your fellow woodland critters in order to learn new abilities to reach previously inaccessible areas of the forest, continue the story, and find more side quests to complete.
Zoink Games has remained fairly tight-lipped on Fe, but its gameplay trailer certainly has us intrigued. This EA Original will release on PC, Switch, PS4, and Xbox One on Feb. 16.
