7 Things to Know Before Jumping Into Days Gone

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

There’s a Big Emphasis on Resources

Recommended Videos

Open world games often have you collecting various resources for crafting and the like, but Days Gone really puts a big emphasis on it. Part of this is because you can only carry limited amounts of items and ammo.

For example, you can only carry four Molotovs at once, but you can carry more of the resources needed to craft Molotovs, meaning once you use the ones you have you can craft more on the spot.

On top of this, you’ll need to scavenge materials for ammo, healing items, scrap to repair weapons and your bike, and more. This means you’ll want to scavenge each building you come across, pop open the trunks of cars to look for ammo or scrap, and loot the bodies of dead enemies.

It’s not a surprise that a post-apocalyptic game puts an emphasis on resources, but it’s important to know just how much scavenging you’re going to need to do. If you’re planning on fighting the hordes of Freakers, you’ll need to do even more.

All Purchased Weapons Get Stored At the Gun Locker

There are a multitude of weapons to use in Days Gone, from baseball bats with barbed wire to crossbows. Of course, there’s also plenty of good old guns as well. You can pick up a ton of weapons just by wandering the world or killing enemies, however, you can also buy them from the various encampments you visit.

The neat thing is that any guns you actually purchase will forever be stored in gun lockers. This means even if you pick up another weapon and drop the gun you bought, you can once again equip it by going to a gun locker, usually found in important buildings and your safehouse.

By the same token, though, guns you simply pick up will not be in your locker, so once you drop it, it’s gone.

Upgrade and Repair Your Bike ASAP

After you make it through the opening of the game you’ll gain access to your trusty bike, and boy are you gonna be spending a lot of time on it. The motorcycle is your main method of travel through the world of Days Gone, and really your only reliable way of getting around, until you unlock fast travel points.

The problem is that your bike isn’t all that sturdy at the start of the game, so you’ll want to immediately focus on upgrading it. To do this you’ll simply need to head to the Mechanic at camps to buy upgrades, but you’ll need Trust and Credits in order to do so. We’ll get to that soon, but you should always be focusing on getting a few bike upgrades first.

This will let you increase the speed and handling, up your bike’s durability, reduce the rate it uses gas, and more. In addition to all that, however, you’ll want to make sure you’re keeping an eye on the durability of your bike at all times.

Simply riding around will reduce durability, but taking a hit on your bike will severely lower it, and if durability reaches zero then you’re a sitting duck. In order to repair the bike, you need scrap, a resource found in all number of places like in car hoods, junkyard, etc. Once you have scrap just run up to the side of your bike and hold circle to repair it.

Gas Cans Respawn

The other vital part of your bike to keep in mind is fuel, as running out of it will leave you in a real tough spot, as you’ll have to head out on foot to find more. Red gas cans are scattered around the world, and you can pick them up, then bring them to your bike to fuel it up.

The good news is that all the gas cans in the game will respawn after a while, more specifically once you leave the area and come back. This means that there’s no limit to how much fuel you can find in the game, as it’s just a matter of driving around to find more.

You can always find a full gas can at your safe house, and you can even fuel up at any gas stations you find by riding right up to the pump and then holding down the circle button.

Pick Up Freaker Ears to Earn More Credits

As we said earlier, you’ll need to earn Trust at camps in order to open up more items, and Trust also translates into Credits you can use to purchase items or upgrades.

The easiest way of getting Trust is by simply completing quests for the inhabitants of the camp, some of which are main story quests. However, there’s another easy way of earning a quick buck to grab more ammo or a motorcycle upgrade, and that’s by collecting bounties.

At camps you can find a bounty desk where you can turn in Freaker ears and other bits from enemies that earn you some quick credits. Luckily, these items are insanely easy to pick up, as all you need to do is run over a dead enemy and you’ll automatically pick it up. You can even see a little icon for the item hovering over a dead enemy.

Any time you kill any kind of infected enemy type you can collect a bounty, although human enemies won’t reward you with anything. You can turn these bounties in at any camp, but make sure you choose which one you want. The bounties you turn in will only give you Trust and Credits in THAT specific camp.

You Can Quicksave at Your Bike

With so many different things that can kill you in the world of Days Gone, saving becomes important. You never know when you’re gonna run into a giant infected bear or a horde of Freakers. Unfortunately, Days Gone doesn’t just let you save whenever you want willy-nilly, but there are a couple of ways to save quickly.

Any time you’re near a bed you can save your game, but you can also do a nice little quicksave at your bike. Whenever you return to your bike, or whenever you hop off of it, you can quicksave by holding down triangle, as the icon in the lower left of the screen says. Make sure you’re manually doing this, however, as the game won’t automatically do it for you.

Burning Nests Will Open a New Fast Travel Point

One of the various missions you’ll see pop up throughout Days Gone is taking out Freaker Nests, which as you probably guessed, spawn Freakers. These Freaker Nests will be tracked quests in your journal, with the objective of destroying each one. Luckily, all you need to do that is a molotov, or something like it.

Just throw one of these at the nest to light it on fire, but be ready as any number of Freakers will run out of it and attack you, or will be attracted by the hubbub. The good news is that every nest you destroy will turn into a new fast travel point. This means the best way of creating a network of points around the world, is to destroy each and every Freaker nest you come across. Just make sure you’re prepared.
