DRAGON QUEST BUILDERS

BEST SWITCH KIDS GAMES OF FEBRUARYdragon quest builders, switch games

Dragon Quest Builders is Square Enix’s answer to taking a piece of the Minecraft pie that’s been selling extremely well for the past seven years or so. Builders takes the world of Dragon Quest and throws in the concept of creation with light RPG elements that the old-school series is known for.

Being hailed as the creator of all things, it’s up to you to to help the townspeople and bring the land from ruin, rebuilding everything and bringing the world back to its former glory. It’s great for the little ones that enjoy the passive nature that Minecraft has to offer, but might be looking for something the goes a little bit deeper. Dragon Quest Builders might be one of the best ways to get a child into the RPG genre without confusing them with extensive lore and battle mechanics.

FE

BEST SWITCH KIDS GAMES OF FEBRUARY

Fe throws you into a beautiful, vibrant world – a world full of colorful creatures, wildlife, and lush environments. Fe is a platformer that doesn’t hold your hand in any way, letting you explore the forest at your own pace. What makes Fe such a wonderful contender for a kid game is the music mechanic that essentially lets you sing/communicate with almost anything that you encounter in the woods.

You can befriend a deer to ride on top of, have a bear fight enemies for you, and even talk to plants to have them grow berries. This is all done seamlessly without any words – just music. Jumping and gliding around the lush woods, befriending animals, and solving puzzles will make any kid smile from head to toe in excitement and bewilderment.

OWLBOY

BEST SWITCH KIDS GAMES OF FEBRUARYowlboy, best, indie, games, november, 2016

With a fantastic soundtrack and clean pixel art-style, Owlboy is one of the best indie games on the Switch that just screams nostalgia. An old-school platformer full of dungeons, an engaging narrative, and some light combat is what makes Owlboy a perfect fit for any younger gamer.

Now that the Switch has been out for a year, there are tons of indie games to discover on the eShop, but Owlboy is the one to play if you’ve been craving some retro-styled gameplay that is truly unique that also caters to all ages. The bosses in the dungeons might be a tad difficult for some, but Owlboy oozes with so much charm that it’ll be worth the challenge for any player.

STEAMWORLD DIG

BEST SWITCH KIDS GAMES OF FEBRUARYsteamworld dig

SteamWorld Dig is what happens when you mix Dig Dug, Metroid, and Castlevania together in one big pot and set it as high as the heat can possibly go. SteamWorld Dig gives you a pick-axe and lets you go ham underground, picking away at dirt, collecting resources and upgrading your abilities to go even further down into the ground.

Each mine that you go into is randomized, forcing you to think on your feet and expect the unexpected. The penalty for dying isn’t too harsh, since you can always go back down to get your loot if you happen to get defeated, making the game easier for the kids to get into. And if they just so happen to dig this game (see what I did there), you can introduce them to SteamWorld Dig 2, which is also on the Switch eShop and does what the original did, but way better.

TOKI TORI 2+

BEST SWITCH KIDS GAMES OF FEBRUARYps4

Toki Tori 2 is a cute little 2D platformer starring an oh so adorable chick named Toki Tori. You traverse environments using Toki’s whistle ability and stomping ability, which are the only two skills that he knows. Seems like a simple and basic moveset, but Toki Tori 2 actually offers a wealth of tricky puzzles to solve.

The Switch port looks super bright and vibrant, with colors oozing all over the place. With its slower-paced action and forgiving gameplay, Toki Tori makes the perfect game for any kid to play. They might have to rack their brains a bit to get through some of the sly puzzles, but that’s good for kids, right?
