This Is Definitely Spider-Man, Not Spider-Boy
Takeaways From The Latest Spider-Man Trailers
In most Spider-Man films, video games, and comics, we are usually introduced to Peter Parker before he gets his super spidy-powers. Seeing him transform from an average high-school student to a crime-fighting vigilante is what makes Spider-Man, Spider-Man. But Insomniac Games is taking a completely different route with their new game that focuses on a brand-new story that features an experienced Peter Parker, eight years of experience to be exact.
Peter Parker has seen it all, he’s 23 years old, and he’s also on the verge of graduating college. Playing as a seasoned superhero means that you will be feeling like Spider-Man more than ever before. Taking down enemies with flashy moves and spectacular web shooting tactics wouldn’t be possible without years of experience, but Insomniac is clearing that issue by throwing us into a story that’s already been established, a story that would usually be told during a game’s second or third sequel.
Traversal Looks Incredible
Takeaways From The Latest Spider-Man Trailer
With an experienced Spider-Man, comes with him exciting and visually appealing ways to traverse around the skyscrapers of New York City. Peter Parker can run on the sides of buildings, latch onto buildings with webs, quickly turn corners, and easily fly high in the sky without touching the ground. Swinging around looks insanely fun and the new trailer makes that immediately apparent. He’s had eight years to perfect his craft, which allows Peter Parker to swing with confidence and style, allowing the player to really feel like they’ve stepped in to the shoes of a proper superhero.
Combat Looks Deep and Inspired By Rocksteady’s Batman
Takeaways From The Latest Spider-Man Trailer
It seems that there are dozens of combat choices that you can do in order to beat up the baddies. You can go the stealthy route, climbing up on construction beams and lift foes up using your web. You can also use environmental hazards like cranes and boxes to hit people with when you’re in a pinch as well. Spider-Man also has little web traps that he can place to stop enemies in their tracks.
Combat looks to be varied, while also taking a little bit of inspiration from Rocksteady’s Batman series. You can dodge enemy attacks using your Spidey Sense, waiting until the last moment to dodge and retaliate against your foe, just like how Batman counterattacked. Unlike Batman, Spider-Man doesn’t look like he plays as a heavy character at all; being light on his feet and having the aerial advantage over thugs throws in a lot of variety when it comes to fighting.
New York Is a Living, Breathing Environment
Takeaways From The Latest Spider-Man Trailer
We’ve seen New York City play a role as the backdrop of a many video games and films even, playing a living, breathing environment, or even taking the place of an actual character. The latest trailer for Insomniac’s Spider-Man shows off the city as being more than just a city, it plays a vital role in making the world feel alive and lived in, instead of being an empty landscape that’s there just for show.
Spider-Man for PS4 shows off the city in a new, beautiful light, with its inhabitants walking around, doing what New Yorker’s do. Peter Parker will stop at nothing to protect the citizens of NYC and we’re sure that the game will use the streets of the city as major beats in the story and gameplay every once in a while, instead of just fighting inside interior environments and abandoned construction sites.
