6 Actors Who Should Play Dr. Reid in The Vampyr TV Show

We might be asking a bit much of Fox21 to score Dominic West for the new Vampyr show, but let’s kick things off by aiming high, shall we? West certainly isn’t short on talent, having earned a Golden Globe for his recent performances as Noah Solloway in The Affair. Before that, he rose to prominence as Detective McNulty in The Wire, as well as Hector Madden in The Hour. Virtually every notable television appearance he’s starred in has earned a nomination for some award or another.

Importantly, for the role of Dr. Jonathan Reid, the native English actor has the sort of suave appearance and accent that would make him a perfect fit for role in the upcoming Vampyr TV show.

Jason Isaacs

The best performances tend to come from the actors that are truly interested in the role, and we think that Jason Isaacs’ track record acting in notable fantasy and science-fiction movies suggests he might have a keen interest in playing a role in a show such as Vampyr. Of course, he’s another big star that might be a little high profile for this production, but even more so than Dominic West, Isaacs has the look. Yep, we think Isaacs would look pretty cool sporting Dr. Reid’s trendy haircut and beard.

Most recognizable in nerd culture for his portrayal of Lucious Malfoy in Harry Potter, Isaacs has also voiced characters such as Ra’s Al Ghul and Lex Luthor in animated productions. He’s also had a bit of experience acting as vampiral characters in video games. Well, sort of… he voiced Satan in Castlevania: Lord of the Shadow and its sequel.

Dougray Scott

True to his name, Dougray Scott is a Scottish actor, but we’ve no doubt he could pull off a 1900s English gentleman a la Dr. Jonathan Reid. And his experience acting in science fiction drama such as the BBC production Day of the Triffids and AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead suggest he’s likely comfortable playing the role of an anti-hero vampire.

Scott’s career has been highlighted by appearances in some big name movies, such as Taken 3. His resume might well have been even more distinguished, however. He was heavily linked with portraying James Bond in Casino Royale before Daniel Craig was confirmed for the role. And more recently, he was offered the role of Wolverine, but the production of another film he was working on ran overtime and prevented him from accepting.

If Vampyr gets the treatment it deserves in this upcoming TV show, it could prove a suitable platform for Scott to make his mark.

Ioan Gruffudd

Ioan Gruffudd’ career spans historical drama, science fiction, and fantasy. His early performance as Horatio Hornblower is his most notable television role, but he’s likely known to US audiences mostly for playing Reed Richards in Fantastic Four. Not the best superhero movie, of course, but that was hardly his fault. Roles in Titanic and Black Hawk Dawn are more fondly remembered, perhaps.

Over the past few years, Gruffudd’s performances have been limited to fairly middling movies. His television roles mostly comprise crime dramas —suitable experience to portray Dr. Reid in Vampyr. Physically, Gruffudd certainly has the look and the accent. In fact, he’s arguably the most similar-looking actor to Reid.

Tobias Menzies

Tobias Menzies is one of British Theatre’s great contemporary actors, but he’s slowly worked his way from notable television performances and some movie productions as well. Fans of historical drama might remember him from the series Rome, and most recently for his dual performance of Frank/Jonathan Randall in Outlander, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. He also played Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones.

We think that Menzies would be a superb fit for Dr. Reid for his experience acting in fantasy and historical drama. He’s certainly well versed in bringing to life characters from that sort of time-period. Perhaps most importantly, he’s the only actor here that’s actually had experience acting in a vampire-themed movie. OK, in Underworld: Blood Wars he played the Lycan Marius… but still, he knows the genre, right?

Tom Mison

Tom Mison is a British actor best known for playing Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow, and we think he’d be an absolutely spot-on pick for Dr. Reid in Vampyr. The youngest actor in this list at 36, we think that’s probably on the money for Reid’s age. He’s also got the look and the accent, too.

Mison hasn’t done a great deal of fantasy or science fiction outside of Sleepy Hollow, but we think that supernatural series is experience enough to portray Dr. Reid in a Vampyr TV show. We also think he’s a more realistic bet than some of the other actors we’ve listed here, given that his most prominent role is a television show and his movie appearances are limited to supporting cast.
