Top 10 Best Fighters in Dragon Ball FighterZ

There are many ways Dragon Ball FighterZ pays homage to the anime series that has inspired it and making Cell such a well rounded character is certainly one of those ways. Perfect Cell is one of the most powerful villains the series has seen and he’s a great pick to have on your team in Dragon Ball FighterZ as well. Cell is a versatile fighter who can easily dominate his opponent at both long and short range. He has great normals that can be linked together and his collection of lows are just great for prolonging combos. One of the best tools at Cell’s disposal is Telekinesis Crush, a full screen, unblockable command grab.

While the animation before this move is a bit too telling and can give your enemy too much time to adjust, it’s also easy to disguise the animation if you’re playing smart. Dragon Ball FighterZ is a game that just has a lot going on on the screen at one time so it’s easy to find a moment where the other player may miss the tell and fall victim to what is probably one of the best ways to get a combo started with Cell. As if all this wasn’t enough, Cell’s Hell Strike gives him a free teleport that doesn’t require the use of any bars, so you can use this to be the king of cross ups or just use it as a get out of the corner free card. Either way, Cell simply has so much going for him that he can fit into any play style and still be a major force to reckon with.

Frieza

Top 10 Best Fighters in Dragon Ball FighterZ

If you love great projectile attacks, you’ll love Frieza in Dragon Ball FighterZ. This iconic villain of the series easily has the most impressive collection of projectile attacks in the game and he still has a hefty bag of close range tricks to use as well. Frieza is a great character for anyone who wants to be able to control space on the screen and also rush down their opponent when the time is right by making use of his teleport.

Just like Cell, Frieza gets an attack that gives him a free teleport so he doesn’t have to use up a bar every time he wants to blink across the screen. But as if his projectiles, added reach with the use of his tail, and free teleport wasn’t enough, Frieza also has one of the best installs in the game. Golden Frieza is a great tool that players should take advantage of. Transforming into this new state gives Frieza added damage, an increase in speed, and it even enhances his ground explosion special.

Adult Gohan

Top 10 Best Fighters in Dragon Ball FighterZ

There is one very key reason why Adult Gohan is such a great pick in Dragon Ball FighterZ but we’re actually going to dive into that a bit later. Overall, Adult Gohan is a solid character in almost every way. He has a kit that’s great for overhead and low mix-ups and it’s easy for opponents to underestimate the reach of his crouching medium attack. These are great things for a character to have at their disposal but Adult Gohan has a very unique ability at his very core that makes him a truly special character in Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Adult Gohan can unlock his full potential in a state called Potential Unleashed. Reaching level 7 of this allows Adult Gohan to laugh in the face of usual fighting game technique. While Potential Unleashed is activated, Adult Gohan can break the combo chain and is not forced to abide by the usual combo pattern of light to medium to heavy. It’s also fair to note that at any level, Potential Unleashed gives Adult Gohan access to a full screen overhead attack. Adult Gohan just has so much going for him that you’ll find yourself pretty tempted to make him a mainstay on any team composition.

Goku Black

Top 10 Best Fighters in Dragon Ball FighterZ

Goku Black is easily one of the most admired new characters to come into the Dragon Ball series and he has also turned out to be an oppressive force in Dragon Ball FighterZ. His Instant Transmission is a great tool for mix-ups. In terms of damage output, his super moves will easily drain an enemy life bar without forcing players to break much of a sweat at all. If you really want to get under someone’s skin, take advantage of Goku Black’s full screen command grab that leads him into a projectile.

Not only is this a great way to put pressure on unsuspecting opponents, but you can also follow this up with a vanish and assist to trigger a lengthy combo. The cherry on top of all this is Goku Black’s dive kick called Fierce God Kick that gives him an automatic wall bounce. If you’re looking for a character that puts out serious damage, has great cross-ups, can easily punish opponents mid-air, and still has great speed and mobility, Goku Black is your guy.

Kid Buu

Top 10 Best Fighters in Dragon Ball FighterZ

There’s only one way to describe fighting against Kid Buu in one word — annoying. While Majin Buu is another solid fighter, he seems to still land in the shadows of his smaller counterpart. Kid Buu makes full use of his stretchy limbs, giving this character an insane amount of reach. If nothing else, it becomes an incredibly pesky thing to deal with on the screen and just aggravating another player is enough to give you an upper hand. But that great reach comes with a lot more just to make sure you truly hate fighting against Kid Buu deep down in your core. Kid Buu’s normals are one of his best assets.

He has plenty of long, easy to confirm normals and his Arm Ball attack is pretty annoying to deal with. Arm Ball hits multiple times with good hit stun. If that wasn’t enough, Kid Buu’s candy beam heals him. While it’s usually no big deal for a character to have a way to slightly heal themselves, any move that heals is usually pretty risky to use or hard to actually get off. Not in Kid Buu’s case. Candy beam is fast and very easy to combo into, which means getting a little health back isn’t really a difficult task for anyone playing Kid Buu. Throw in his exceptional anti-airs and long range lows and you have a character who can deliver great offensive pressure. Kid Buu isn’t an OP character or impossible to deal with but he will certain test your nerves if you find him on the opposing team.

Super Saiyan Blue Goku

Top 10 Best Fighters in Dragon Ball FighterZ

Nobody wants to spend a lot of time unlocking a character in a fighting game just to discover they aren’t even that great. Fortunately, Super Saiyan Blue Goku is absolutely worth unlocking in Dragon Ball FighterZ. Whether you grind it out to get enough zeni, unlock him by dominating the Hyperbolic Time Chamber course on hard, or you just simply got him as a special gift for pre-ordering, he will be worth your time. The first thing to note here is that Super Saiyan Blue Goku is one of the few characters that doesn’t really seem to have a hard counter pick. With his kit he either has an advantage over most characters or is at least evenly matched.

SSB Goku has a light auto combo that comes complete with an overhead/low mix up.  If you stop the combo after the low, you can actually mix things up with a medium mixup instead to keep your enemy really guessing what you’re next move will be. He also has an easy way to get out of the corner with the EX version of Divine Void Strike, a solid number of cross ups at his disposal, and a one of the best command grabs in the game.

Beerus

Top 10 Best Fighters in Dragon Ball FighterZ

This is one character on the list that I’m sure will come with backlash as there is a huge flaw with Beerus that makes him frustrating to use in Dragon Ball FighterZ — his hit box. Beerus seriously needs a buff to his hit box, especially when it comes to his low kicks. Beerus players are currently being punished for “whiffing” lows despite the fact that Beerus’ foot is actually reaching their opponent. It’s certainly a problem in a game like this where a few extra inches of reach can make a world of a difference but it’s also a simple fix. The reality is that Beerus as a whole has a pretty solid kit.

His damage output makes him a pain in the corner. If he traps you here and you have no way out, you could see a huge chunk of your life bar vanish pretty quickly. His orbs, while difficult to get out, are great tools once you manage to get them on screen. The orbs add a great bit of variety to what you can do with Beerus. You can summon the orbs in a more defensive strategy and keep your opponent from feeling free to rush you down or summon the orbs and knock them towards your opponent for a more offensive strategy. Beerus isn’t going to be a character that’s very easy to use but the options for how you can use him, especially if you have mastered the art of assists, make him a solid pick in most lineups.

Android 16

Top 10 Best Fighters in Dragon Ball FighterZ

When assessing a character’s viability in a game like this, you have to take their assists into consideration. While Android 16 is a great pick on his own, which we will dive into shortly, he also has a particularly useful assist. Many characters in Dragon Ball FighterZ have an assist that will actually launch your opponent or fire off some sort of laser beam, but Android 16 will come into frame to actually hold your enemy down instead. This point-blank assist move gives you the opportunity to follow up with any kind of move you want without having to only focus on moves that are great for juggling.

Now for Android 16 as a whole, he is a great pick because he plays exactly the way you would imagine. This big brute is slow but powerful and anyone who wants to defeat him will have to overcome his added armor. In other words, this serious damage dealer also has an extra line of defense so taking him down will be a test of patience. In terms of his moves, Android 16 is one of the best combo finishers in the game who also comes with an unblockable command grab. If you’re looking for a solid grappler, Android 16 is easily the best pick for this type of play style.

Android 18

Top 10 Best Fighters in Dragon Ball FighterZ

Android 18’s nerf since the beta still wasn’t enough to keep her from being a solid pick in Dragon Ball FighterZ. The amount of incredibly useful moves and combos Android 18 can utilize without the use of any meter is pretty impressive — like how she can combo into Dragon Rush without using any meter. Since she doesn’t necessarily have to use a lot of meter to hold her own in battle, it allows her to build up and conserve meter in a way many other characters can’t.

As with any fighting game, a meter advantage can make a world of difference. She also still has her barrier on hand, which shuts down most offensive pushes while also rewarding her with more meter. The last key piece of her kit comes in the form of Android 17. The aid she gets from her fellow android gives her some solid block strings. Even if she’s not on screen at the moment, it’s important to note that the barrier also serves as her assist. Calling for an assist from Android 18 means she will quickly appear on screen and trigger the barrier, giving any other fighter in your roster an added boost in terms of defense.

Hit

Top 10 Best Fighters in Dragon Ball FighterZ

Hit comes with his fair share of disadvantages in Dragon Ball FighterZ but he has great tools that easily compensate for his shortcomings.  Hit is a bit slower than other characters in the game and this means he’s easily punished for whiffing, but his offensive abilities are quite a force to behold.

His kit relies on cross-ups and while he can be punished for whiffing he also punishes with a heavy hand if his opponent does the same. Perhaps one of his most impressive moves comes in the form of a counter that actually sets you up for a full and devastating combo if paired with a vanish or assist. In the right hands, Hit is simply an incredibly challenging character to deal with.
