THE BIG GAME
PS PLUS FREE GAMES FOR JANUARY 2018
2018 is at our doorstep folks, and with it a whole new year of free games from Sony’s online PS Plus subscription for PS3, PS4, and PS Vita owners. Although we don’t know for sure what games will be offered to players in January 2018 at this moment, we have some guesses at what might be included on that list.
Every month there is usually one bigger game headlining the rest. For example this time last year the headliner for January 2017’s PS Plus game’s list was Day of The Tentacle Remastered for PS4 (with cross-buy on PS Vita also included). Fans of the 1993 original game could replay the hand-illustrated classic with improved graphics on their newest console for the first time.
For next month, or at least sometime very soon, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag make it to players via a PS Plus subscription. Originally releasing back in October 2013, the sixth addition to the major mainline installment in Assassin’s Creed series took to the Seven Seas following pirate protagonist Edward Kenway. It released for PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U in October, with a next gen release on Ps4, Xbox One, and PC occurring a month later in November 2013.
Black Flag has never been included in a PS Plus lineup, but just back in August 2017 its standalone expansion Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry made it to players for free alongside Just Cause 3 the same month. Sony hasn’t been shy in including larger AAA games with PS Plus lately either, with critically acclaimed Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain being offered for free back in October 2017. Offering the full Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag game would be a great way for Sony to kick off the new year on PS Plus.

INDIES
PS PLUS FREE GAMES FOR JANUARY 2018
A few indie games always make the PS Plus list along with one or two bigger titles, and this month a great inclusion would be The Witness by well-known indie developer Johnathan Blow.
It’s pretty surprising that The Witness hasn’t made it to PS Plus thus far to be honest. Released back in January 2016, it is an extremely well-received puzzle game with over 500 puzzles to work through, and a vivid and colorful world to complete them in. It’s always a nice game to have on your console in case you are in the mood for a relaxing time working through some puzzles, most of which are very creatively designed by working in the environment itself for their resolution.
Another likely indie is Blackwood Crossing from Vision Games Publishing. As teenager Scarlet, you begin in a mysterious circumstance that has caused you and your brother Finn to wake up on a moving train heading to who knows where. This action-adventure title has you work through Finn and Scarlet’s interesting relationship as orphan siblings, as his suffering becomes more and more apparent.

PSVR GAME
PS PLUS FREE GAMES FOR NOVEMBER 2017
Not every month, but often enough, a PSVR game is included in the mix of free games on PS Plus. Since the PSVR’s release in October 2016, Sony has been working hard on making their VR console a viable competitor to its PC predecessors Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. A great way to do this is to offer players a free game every so often that will keep owners happy and perhaps entice some PS4/PS3 owners to make the leap from regular old console owner to VR owner.
For January 2018 we believe the console launching title PlayStation VR Worlds would be a smart choice after the holiday shopping rush to include for free for a couple reasons. Firstly, PlayStation VR Worlds is already included in a console bundle for those who want to purchase more than just the headset in one go. There are also several other bundles, for example one including Skyrim VR, so for those who picked up the headset and not the Worlds bundle they can still check it out without paying full price.
Secondly, PlayStation VR Worlds itself is a game designed to show off the capabilities of VR with five specifically designed experiences to choose from. Since it is likely Sony will sell some VR units for holiday gifting, it makes sense to offer a basic game like this to players to have in their back pocket so whenever a family member or friend who is new to VR wants to try it out, they have something easy and fun to show them.
Make sure to check back with Twinfinite in a week or so to see what games will officially be released on PS Plus for January 2018.
