Don’t Let His Appearance Fool You
When you turn on Overwatch right now you will see the big, muscular Talon agent standing before you with his massive gauntlet on full display. Doomfist occupies significantly more screen real estate than your usual offense heroes but don’t let this fool you. Doomfist is not a tank and he is not to be played like one. His sheer size and intimidating weapon may tempt you to rush to the front lines and prepare to punch the crap out of all your enemies, but rest assured you will quickly die this way. Doomist is not a hero who is made to absorb a lot of damage. Sure, Doomfist has a passive ability that will grant him shields but you have to first deal out some significant damage before that shield is strong enough to keep you alive at the front lines in the midst of an intense battle.
You Can Cancel Rocket Punch
Unlike many other heroes in Overwatch, Doomfist can easily cancel his ability before committing to it. This means Doomfist introduces a certain element of mind games to Overwatch while also forcing players to think twice about their decision to use their Rocket Punch. Rocket Punch has to charge up if you want it to be a truly devastating attack that deals tons of damage while also shoving your enemies away from you. In some cases, however, you won’t want to commit to hurling yourself towards an enemy. It’s important that you cancel the ability if you realize it’s no longer safe to toss yourself closer to the enemy or if your chances of landing the attack have been significantly lowered.
Now, for the concept of mind games. With certain heroes it will be in your best interest to trick them into thinking you’re going to use Rocket Punch when you really have no intention on throwing yourself into the fray just yet. Force D.Va to throw up Defense Matrix or Orisa to use her Fortify before canceling the animation and using a different attack now that they have essentially wasted a key defensive ability. This also brings us to the next key thing to remember before you attempt to square up with enemies as Doomfist in Overwatch.
Consider Who You’re About to Rocket Punch
Rocket Punch can be a great offensive tool but not every hero in Overwatch is created equal—and the same goes for your Rocket Punches. You will want to consider the matchup before you decide to Rocket Punch an enemy. For example, Rocket Punch won’t actually push back an enemy Bastion that’s already in Sentry Configuration. If Bastion still has a full health bar, you might not be able to do enough damage head on before he can pick Doomfist off. Take the time to try the Rocket Punch out against a variety of different heroes to see how they all match up and what tools they have that can have a seriously impact on the Rocket Punch.
Players have already discovered that Ana’s Sleep Dart will put Doomfist to sleep but he still travels a significant distance before taking his nap. In this case, attempting a Rocket Punch on Ana might be worth the risk if she doesn’t have any other teammates around to capitalize on the Sleep Dart. Roadhog’s hook will snatch Doomfist right out of the Rocket Punch animation and Orisa, of course, will stay put if she is using her Fortify ability.
Panic Ults Are Acceptable Here
We’ve all done it. We will all continue to do it. We will all still rage when someone else on our team does it. Panic ulting. Sometimes when things are getting really intense in Overwatch, you can’t figure out why your health bar is draining so quickly and the fray of battle just has you rattled, you squeeze off your ultimate in an attempt to just stay alive. In most cases, this is a terrible move and it’s rather inexcusable. In Doomfist’s case, however, players may be willing to turn the other cheek. While using your ultimate out of sheer panic in Overwatch should never become a habit, Doomfist has an ultimate that allows him to escape to a safety zone and create distance between himself and the enemy team.
If your team really can’t afford to lose any offensive power at the time, don’t be afraid to use your ultimate just for the sake of running away. Not to mention using the ultimate will still force the enemy team to scatter and possibly waste an ultimate of their own in anticipation of an attack that was never actually coming their way. You could have a situation where you save your own backside, force the enemy to throw out a Sound Barrier and give your team time to regroup before unleashing an attack on an enemy team that is short one ultimate that they wish they still had.
Combos Will Be Absolutely Key
If you haven’t played any fighting games in a long time you may want to reach into that section of your brain that used to focus on linking attacks together for devastating combos and give it a good dusting. You’re going to need that mentality here. Perhaps more than any other character in the game, Doomfist will rely heavily on his ability to land a clean combo with his abilities and string it all together just right.
Ideally, you will want to find opportunities to use Seismic Slam to bring an enemy closer to you, line up a clean Rocket Punch to knock them back, and hopefully smash them into a wall for extra damage and then follow it all up with a Rising Uppercut. This will deliver a stunning amount of damage that the average hero won’t be able to live through without some assistance from a healer. If you become a pro at this wombo combo, you’ll easily have the enemy team fearing the reign of Doomfist.
