A War Between Aliens
Like in the first Destiny, Destiny 2 lets all the alien races play together, although they don’t exactly take kindly to one another. During the Inverted Spire strike, you’re led through a level that has you facing primarily Cabal, although a Vex can show up from time to time. They don’t appear super often though, keeping your focus on the mission at hand (stopping the boss).
However, if you decide to go off the beaten path the different races don’t just fight, they have all out wars. Fallen ships send in tons of new enemies, the Vex come out of the woodwork, and the Cabal utilize their toughest soldiers. It’s a brutal battle filled with tons of explosions and brutal contests of strength. You can jump into the fray as well if you want to, but come prepared.Â
Vehicles! (Only Pikes)
One thing that you may have noticed when jumping into the Destiny 2 beta is that there are no vehicles you can summon, even though you’re outdoors. But you’re not completely out of some speedy transportation. It turns out that while our Guardians weren’t given their license just yet, the Fallen certainly know how to get around in style.
If you wait around long enough, some Pike Dregs will show their faces, letting you kill them and take their rides. You can then take those rides and wreak havoc on the aliens roaming about. They work just like they do in Destiny 1, and are a great way to do some quick exploration (rather than stay stuck on your feet).Â
Possible Dark Sector Doors?
While exploring the area in the opposite direction of the objective in Destiny 2’s Inverted Spire strike we came across a trail of Dark Sector symbols that led to this door. If it looks familiar, it’s because one just like it can be found right before encountering Atheon in the Vault of Glass.
What’s curious is that when we approached it and got as close as digitally possible, we could hear things on the other side (odd bells, and other mechanical noises). Sounds we couldn’t hear anywhere else while exploring. It’s pretty interesting, but it seems like Bungie locked things up extra tight during the beta – that or it’s only accessible during patrol. It’s still pretty cool though, and we can’t wait to see what lies beyond.Â
A New Fallen House?
While exploring we came across Vex and Cabal, which was to be expected, but it was the Fallen that appeared out of nowhere that caught out attention. They’re new, not just in name, but in appearance as well. They don purple cloaks and capes, use new powers more similar to those of Guardians, and have these piercing, glowing eyes.
There was a new rank, similar to Dregs in that they had only two arms, but far more agile and powerful. Their symbol is one that we haven’t seen before as well, which makes us wonder if this is the infamous lost house of the Fallen.Â
Teleportation
The final thing we found was what appears to be a puzzle revolving around jump circles and teleportation. Scattered through the strike you can actually locate some teleportation pads which help you fast travel to earlier parts of the Destiny 2 beta activity. Those seemed pretty straightforward, until we found some rings that were powered by nothing other than the deaths of Quantum Vex Hobgoblins.
What makes things even more interesting is the loud noise that plays after completion, almost as if we did something wrong, missed some small detail that messed up the cycle. It looks like Destiny 2 will have its own series of interesting puzzles, riddles, and challenges. Perhaps these portals were just a mere glimpse.
