Scavenge For Anything and Everything
The Outer Worlds shares a lot of DNA with the likes of Fallout New Vegas. If you’ve played the latter, you know scavenging is a major part of the experience. Well, the exact same can be said for Outer Worlds.
While you’re out exploring the worlds of Halcyon, you’ll come across countless bits and bobs; new weapons, consumables, junk, armor, and more.
It’s in your best interest to collect what you can, for a few different reasons. Junk can instantly be sold off at a vendor to make a bunch of Bits, while excess weapons and armor can also be sold.
On the other hand, you can also break down weapons and armor into parts which you’ll need to repair your equipped ones.
Then with consumables, you can slot them into your medical inhaler, giving you beneficial stat boosts on top of healing. In all, scavenging is a major part of the Outer Worlds so you shouldn’t neglect it.
Level Up Your Leadership Early
There are a lot of stats to choose from in The Outer Worlds, and it can be a bit overwhelming at first to decide where to put points. One of the first stats you should invest in, though, is leadership.
At the very least you want to get it to 20 early on, as this lets you use companion abilities mapped to the D-pad. These are hugely useful abilities that can cause a ton of damage to enemies or stagger them, and are simply on a cooldown.
Past that, high leadership skills can increase the damage your companion’s cause, or the amount they’re healed by your inhaler. You don’t have to sink all of your points into leadership, but you should put at least a bit into it to bolster the effectiveness of your companions.
Of course, once you reach 50, you’ll unlock each skill separately and will have to put points into Inspiration and Determination independently.
Don’t Forget to Change Your Companion’s Equipment
If you didn’t catch on already, companions are your biggest asset in combat and can really help get you through a tough situation.
Each companion automatically comes with their own weapons and armor, but you should absolutely update them with the best gear you have.
While your equipment takes priority, don’t neglect your companions as putting a powerful gun on one of them can be hugely helpful. Remember too, that they don’t use ammo for guns, while you do.
You can also enhance equipment with mods then give it to a companion, bumping up their capabilities even more.
Tinker With Your Weapons to Improve Them
Just like with any RPG, you’re bound to come across a few weapons you prefer in The Outer Worlds, but then you’re hit with the conundrum of getting new and better ones. Well, the game does have a way that you can still keep old weapons relevant, or give a boost to a new one.
By heading to a workbench, you can tab over to the second option called Tinker, and use bits to improve the damage of a weapon. You literally don’t need anything besides Bits, which if you’re scavenging a lot like we said before, you should have quite a few of.
Every weapon can be improved as much as you want, but each time you Tinker, the cost goes up. This way, you can keep an old weapon powerful but you’ll have to pay for it.
No matter what weapon you’re using we recommend tinkering with every single one at least three times, at it’ll only cost you a measly 200 Bits and get you a nice damage bonus.
Play How You Want
More than any other tip we can give you, playing the Outer World’s the way you want to is most important. It’s a game entirely based around player choice, and that’s not just limited to dialogue choices.
There’s no right or wrong way to use your skill points, and although we mentioned Leadership earlier, that really the only skill tip we can give you.
There are tons of different ways to build your character, and the game is good about giving you options in different missions. If your persuade skill isn’t high enough in dialogue, maybe your medical knowledge is.
Feel free to specialize in a couple of categories, or be a jack-of-all-trades. The point is, there’s no wrong answer. This goes for the general layout of the game as well, as there are countless side quests and tasks to complete.
