Rise of the Tomb Raider may feature microtransactions according to some new listings for the game which have just been put up on the Xbox Live store. These new listings are for Expedition Cards which will be some sort of gameplay modifiers which come in five different tiers.
When you purchase a set of Expedition Cards, you will be given a random set of cards, which according to which tier you bought, will contain certain rare cards. The fact you don’t know what cards you’ll get, implies that you will be encouraged to buy cards repeatedly.
The five different card packs include the Wild Pack, Challenge Pack, Silver Pack, Gold Pack, and Advantage Pack. Whether these packs will differ in price is unknown, as is how much they will cost. Presumably, the more valuable packs will be more expensive and the more common ones will be cheaper.
Nothing has been confirmed at this point by Square Enix, but it seems odd that these packs would be downloadable if they were free. The fact they’re on the Xbox Live Marketplace suggests they will cost money. Given how unpopular microtransactions are amongst video gamers, there will no doubt be quite a backlash if this turns out to be true.
