Ubisoft has announced today that Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will introduce the first transgender character to the series. The character in question is Ned Wynert, a transgender male that gives quests for siblings Evie and Jacob Frye. Also new with Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Syndicate is the game’s opening statement, which now reads as follows (new addition in bold):
“Inspired by historical events and characters, this work of fiction was designed, developed, and produced by a multicultural team of various beliefs, sexual orientations and gender identities.”
What makes this important for this series in particular is the flak Ubisoft caught last year with Assassin’s Creed Unity, where the lack of playable female characters was explained as women being “too hard to animate.” Not only is this the first game in the series to have a transgender character, it’s also the first game in the series to let you choose between a male or female assassin as both have their own missions.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate eagle dives onto the PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 23.
