Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is many things. It’s a tactical espionage game, a third person action game, a farm simulator (just trust us on that one), and you also have to manage an entire military. Building a military is as simple as knocking some poor sap out and strapping him to a balloon (again, just trust us on that one). But there is a lot more depth to Metal Gear Solid V: TPP than just collecting soldiers. You’re responsible for keeping them in line and making sure they don’t go after one another’s throats.
This can sometimes be easier said than done. Boys will be boys is what they always say, and the idiots you extract from the field sometimes seem to not have reached manhood just yet. Fortunately enough, we have a few tips that will help you to keep everyone happy and friendly, at least with each other, because they will kill whoever you send them after.
Keep Your GMP in the Black
You use GMP for acquiring gear, upgrades, calling in requests, and sending things back to base. You also need to fund the operations on Mother Base. Fuel, materials, and food are all needed by your army, and none of it comes free. If your GMP starts to drop, that means you can’t supply as much stuff as you were before. If it hits the red, then you’re in serious trouble.
Morale will start to drop among your soldiers as they feel they aren’t getting proper care and compensation. This will lead them to becoming serious jerks (like they were before you kidnapped them), and when things get really bad, they will begin to defect from the Diamond Dogs.
Always make sure to keep your funds up. If you’re having a bit of trouble doing so, consult this handy guide to keep Boss and co. rolling in credits.
Show Your Face Around Mother Base
In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, you are the Big Boss. The commander of all that you survey. Your soldiers know this and look up to you. Volunteers come from all over the world to serve you, and the guys you’ve ripped from their patrols have learned to respect you. Use this to your advantage.
Just the mere act of walking around Mother Base will raise the morale of your soldiers. Even better is the fact that they want to be trained by you. Just walk up and beat the ever-loving crap out of them and they’ll be grateful for the experience. This is one of the easiest ways to boost morale, since it costs you nothing but time.
So make sure to head back to Mother base after every couple of missions, just to let everyone know that you’re still there for now. You’d be surprised by the power of a friendly face (even if it is heavily scared and has a shrapnel horn).
Troublemakers are Better in Pairs
Every now and then, you will come across a recruit that is labeled a Troublemaker in Metal Gear Solid V: TPP. These guys are the worst. They absolutely love starting trouble and picking fights. One would think that the best way to deal with one of these guys is to just get rid of him. But, it turns out that the best method is to give them a dose of their own medicine.
Putting two Troublemakers on the same platform creates a sort of balance. While one would do nothing but wreak havoc, two will keep one another in check. It just isn’t as fun being a total douche when you have to share the limelight.
With these simple tips, you will keep your soldiers’ morale high and cease in-fighting on Mother Base. The Diamond Dogs needs everyone to be on their A-game, so keep your troops happy.
