The most recent entry in the Gears of War franchise, this title is perfect for bringing a group of three friends together for some strategic, hyper-violent action. Set 25 years after the events of the original trilogy, players take the role of the children of the original protagonists, each as ready to rip through locust hordes as their forebears. This is bolstered by the improvements and tweaks made to the gameplay for next gen hardware, ranging from new armaments to a slew of new mechanics to experiment with.

You and your friends  can take on the campaign, online multiplayer or horde modes together, each refined and polished to a tee. Plus, with Gears of War 5 rumored to be on the horizon, there’s no better time to resharpen your skills alongside each other.

Rocket League

The racing and soccer hybrid is already fun when played online, but it becomes that much better when you’re playing it with two other friends. From pulling off crazy, intricate shots to dominating multiplayer matches with your teamwork, the game is tailor made to creating memorable multiplayer experiences that only become better the more players that are thrown into the mix. That’s to say nothing of the game’s massive online community, which offers no shortage of opponents for you to take on together. So start up your vehicle of choice, call up two pals and hop into the action.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

Few games can compare to the zaniness of the borderlands series. Full of fowl mouthed marauders slinging dong jokes and bullets at each other in equal measure, it’s a series that revels in its incredulousness as much as its deep stat based gameplay.

It’s good, then, that the remastered Handsome Collection offers some of the best multiplayer around, easily allowing a group of three to dive into crazed adventures full of monsters, guns and screw ball comedy together. Whether by taking on quests, facing down the planet’s hostile inhabitants or uncovering the location of the mythical Vault together, the time will seem to fly by as you all come together for the sake of having a wild time, and with three games to choose from, it’l be a long while ’til you have to step away from the world of Pandora.

Diablo III

Diablo III, necromancer beta

When it comes to multiplayer fantasy experiences, few can rival that which Diablo III provides. Offering a wide array of different classes to choose from, a team of three players can easily turn an ordinary night into one full of gaming hijinks. Choosing from any number of party combinations, you and your friends can take on the hordes of the lord of darkness in a grinding, loot filled extravaganza. That’s only going off of what’s offered in the vanilla version of the game, too; with the DLC content from the Reaper of Souls expansion, the adventures only become that much more entertaining and could easily become your trio’s multiplayer game of choice.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Sometimes the best way to spend time with friends is to fall back on some old classics. A remastered collection of the original Halo trilogy, the Master Chief Collection takes all of what made the original games great and applies an HD sheen to them. This includes the games’ local multiplayer, allowing you and a couple of friends to jump back into the crazed multiplayer matches from when you were younger. Set up an all rocket launchers match, go at each other with elite swords or see who can wrack up the most head shots in a pistol match; whatever your poison, this game will let you set it up. And hey, if you’re in the mood to take the chaos online, there’s never been a better time to do so. Bungie has been hard at work tweaking and honing online functionality since launch, making the game’s far and above where they were when they originally launched.
