ARK: Survival Evolved – How and Where to Get Oil

At some point in ARK: Survival Evolved, you’re going to want some oil. Whether it be to make Gasoline, Jerky, or just some soap, oil’s a handy resource that isn’t always easy to find, so here’s all the ways to get it.

First up, you can of course harvest it from the world. Oil nodes will spawn in the ocean, on Snow Biome beaches, and in underwater caves. In the ocean, keep an eye out for dark flows floating up from the deep sea. You can also find nodes on the ocean floor. Because of the ocean’s inherent dangers (AKA Sharks all over) it’s much easier to mine with the help of a Megalodon, Ichthy, or Dunkleosteus. You can also find nodes above water in Whitesky Peak.

Using a SCUBA Tank or Lazarus Chowder, you can hold your breath long enough to explore an underwater cave. Here, you can often find lucrative nodes, but don’t forget some dino protection.

You can peacefully avoid the water over in Snow Biomes, where deposits can be found on icebergs or beaches. If you’re not into old-fashioned mining, you can also get this resource by putting Feces into the inventory of a Dung Beetle, or by killing Trilobites.
