Though it slants more toward fantasy Shonen than Isekai, Noragami scratches the same itch as The Devil Is a Part-Timer! in more ways than you might expect.
Centered around the premise of how Gods would exist in modern-day Japan, the story follows the lesser-known god Yato as he struggles to maintain his presence in the human world.
How he does this can vary wildly, though. One day, he might need to battle evil spirits plaguing the living, showing off his practiced and honed abilities as a god of death. The next day, he might spend hours cleaning toilets per a freelance help hotline he has set up, earning an offering of 5 Yen in the process.
This leads to a variety of strange and wacky scenarios, with him dragging a variety of other characters into the shenanigans for good measure.
It’s a premise you won’t find in many other places, and the way it bounces between the fantastical and mundane is sure to strike a chord with The Devil Is a Part-Timer fans. Likewise, there’s a decent amount to dig into, with it boasting two complete seasons available for viewing on Hulu and Funimation.
How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord
Anime Like The Devil Is a Part-Timer
Though it might reverse the premise of The Devil Is a Part Timer!, How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord strikes a similar balance of comedic storytelling and action.
In typical Isekai fashion, the show sees a shut-in transported into his favorite video game as an all-powerful demon lord. He takes this as an opportunity to embrace a new life, attempting to act as a Demon Lord would and using his newfound powers as he sees fit.
The only problem is, he’s still very much the shy and introverted person he was in his past life. As a result, his attempts to fill his new role are littered with growing pains, awkward situations and shenanigans that he has to work his way through with the help of the friends and allies he makes throughout the world.
Though it can be a bit lewd at times, the show has plenty of personality and heart to make up for it. You’ll easily sympathize with the protagonist despite his flaws, and like with The Devil Is a Part-Timer!’s Mao, you’ll be rooting for him to achieve happiness in his new life before you know it.
The first season is currently available on Crunchyroll, with a second season on its way in April.
Re:Creators
Anime Like The Devil Is a Part-Timer
Though it’s not as common as a traditional Isekai set-up, the idea of fantasy characters coming to our world isn’t a totally foreign concept. Case in point: Re:Creators, the acclaimed action anime streamed through Amazon Prime Video back in 2017.
Similar to the Fate series, the show sees heroes brought into the real world to do battle with one another. The only catch is they’re all from fictional works across several mediums, including video games, anime, and manga.
While this means they’re capable of wielding other-worldly powers, it also means said heroes experience a fair bit of whiplash once they land in our world. Some discover truths and beliefs they held can be discredited through the logic of our world, while others find they enjoy our world far more than they did their own.
It’s a blast to watch it all unfold as the show progresses, and like with the cast of The Devil Is a Part-Timer!, it makes the characters more likable and relatable the more they have to adapt to the real world.
Admittedly, this series is very slanted toward action, so don’t expect the laughs to keep coming non-stop while watching it.
Overlord
Anime Like The Devil Is a Part-Timer
Though it offers the exact opposite scenario presented in The Devil Is a Part-Timer!, the shows have plenty in common in all the right ways.
Where Devil sees demons and heroes brought to the real world, Overlord instead whisks an everyday gamer into the fantasy world of his favorite MMORPG. Not only that, but he is reborn as his created character – an all-powerful, evil overlord, capable of defeating anyone and everyone he comes across.
Knowing this, the protagonist hatches a scheme: With the help of his minions and allies, he’ll set up a scenario wherein he defeats every other evil-doer in the world, and then take control of it for himself.
Of course, things take plenty of twists and turns on the way to this goal. It’s for the best though, as viewers get plenty of chances to get to know the main cast and root for them to succeed in the process. Not only that, but there are tons of amazing fights and battles to witness, balancing out with the series’ moments of comedy nicely.
To top it all off, there are three complete seasons available for streaming via Hulu and Crunchyroll, meaning you’ll have plenty of content to watch before running out.
KonoSuba
Anime Like The Devil Is a Part-Timer
One of The Devil Is a Part Timer!’s strongest features is its comedy, and few shows can match the laughs it provides. Fortunately, KonoSuba is more than up to the task.
Following the anti-social Kazuma’s reincarnation into another world, he sets out to make the most of this new opportunity. The only problem is he isn’t on his own in this endeavor. Alongside him are the ill-fortuned goddess Aqua; the masochistic knight Darkness; and the Explosion magic-obsessed Megumin.
While all of them are walking disasters on their own, they prove to be even more prone to hardship together. Nonetheless, they have to try to work together to make it as an adventuring party, leading to all sorts of problems that they create and solve in equal measure.
It’s the definition of being drawn in by a trainwreck, and that’s meant in the best way possible. Seeing how these deeply-flawed characters fail spectacularly or blunder their way into success is hilarious, and before long you grow to love these human dumpster fires.
There are two seasons and a movie available to watch on Crunchyroll too, meaning you’ll be able to watch them fumble their way through many a dilemma before you’re out of episodes to enjoy.
