Mafia III Tweeted out a Mysterious Code, Here’s What it Means

The world got a nice little postcard from Mafia III’s Twitter account today. Greetings from New Bordeaux, home to cool music, hot nights, and huge encoded letter sequences.

The letters shown at the end of the GIF follow a standard shift code, a method where each letter of the original message is shifted a certain number left or right on the alphabet. Taking a piece of the text, you can try shifting the letters various amounts until you find a number and direction that makes real words, in this case it was 9 to the left. Here’s the full code translated:

I’ll always have a soft spot for the Rat Pack when it comes to music, but there’s a lot of opportunities we could be taking advantage of, especially in New Bordeaux. More than just operatjng out rooms. I’m talking about legitilate businesses. Considering how infmuential music is in this town, it could be another angle to get around my favorite uncle Vito”

The sequence leaves us with a couple of misspelled words, but overall, supremely more legible.

The end of the message also references Vito, the main character of Mafia II who will be returning in the third entry as one of the player’s companions or “Underbosses.” These minibosses run certain regions of the game once you’ve taken them over.

Mafia III releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC October 7, 2016.
