Nintendo Says Wii U Production Will Continue Through the Year – Report

Maybe the Wii U isn’t saying goodbye just yet.

Following recent reports that the Wii U is to stop all production in 2016 Nintendo has told ITMedia (translation via engadget) that this is not true.

“That’s [Nikkei’s report] not an official announcement. We plan to continue production through the rest of the year,” said a representative for Nintendo.

The Wii U has been out roughly three years now and has only sold 12.60 million units as of Dec. 31, which is 45.34 million and 89.03 less than the Nintendo 3DS and Wii, respectively. The Wii U is also firmly behind competitors PlayStation 4, which has sold over 35 million, and the Xbox One, which has sold around 15 million. While sales haven’t been so great for the hardware, its newer games have sold well recently. Splatoon has sold over 4 million copies and Super Mario Maker has sold over 3 million copies.
