World War Z Sold Over 1 Million Copies in its First Week

Today World War Z publisher Focus House and developer Saber Interactive announced that their film-based zombie co-op shooter had surpassed more than 1 million copies sold since its release on April 16 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

The sheer number of sales was achieved despite the game not being on Steam, as an Epic Games Store exclusive. It’s an impressive sight for New Jersey-based studio Saber, who released NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 and Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn last year, and also goes a ways to prove that zombie games are still in demand.

Speaking to VentureBeat, Saber founder Matthew Karch said that World War Z performed better than he thought it would outside the US and that the game had 70,000 people playing at its peak during the week of launch:

“Overall the U.S. and EU have been equally strong in sales. We have had 70,000 people playing at once across all platforms, with very similar distribution among PC (Epic Games Store), PS4 and Xbox. What surprises us is the fact that sales outside of the US on the Epic Store have been so strong, with the US being only one quarter of sales.”

World War Z is a third-person co-op shooter set in the same zombie-ridden apocalypse as the 2013 film. The campaign mode allows up to four players to work together to tackle hordes of zombies. Multiplayer features what Saber are calling “PvPvZ”, meaning your squad can take on another team of players at the same time while you both have to fend off the rampage of zombies.

This joining forces of Saber and Focus House has evidently proven to be a good one, and has probably contributed to their announcement that they’d be strengthening their relationship earlier this month.
