Oddworld: Soulstorm got a brand new teaser at Unity’s GDC 2019 keynote. At just under one and a half minutes, the cinematic shows off the graphical advancements made possible by the engine.
The teaser will probably ring some nostalgia bells for some, as the long-spanning series got its start in the late nineties with 2D platformer Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee. Over the years titles like New ‘n’ Tasty and Stranger’s Wrath have kept the series a quirky favorite. Meanwhile, the series has made its way into three dimensions, toyed with first and third-person, and even added shooter elements.
Oddworld is a rather, well, odd series. The games are set on the eponymous planet of Oddworld, inhabited by the lumpy, amphibian-like Mukodons. The games show a society pushed to the brink, albeit with a fairly goofy tone. The characters of Abe, Munch, and the Stranger escape such dangers as slavery, murder, and extinction of their species.
With over two decades under its belt, the series isn’t the most prolific, with many titles simply being updates of older ones to be ported to a new console. Despite this, Oddworld has continued to be a popular mainstay, and even today many fondly remember growing up with at least one of the games.
As well as the trailer developer Oddworld Inhabitants also showed a scene breakdown of the cinematic and an up-close look at a character model. They describe Soulstorm as a “big visual and cinematic leap aiming to break new ground”, something clearly apparent from the cinematic’s high-definition visuals.
Not much is knows about the game yet, except that it will, in fact, be a retelling of Abe’s Oddysee and still follow Abe, but with a refreshed narrative and new gameplay mechanics. Check out the official website for more information on the game.
Oddworld: Soulstorm is heading our way in 2020.
