It’s Valentine’s Day, a time to buy chocolate and flowers for your spouse, send Hallmark cards to your childhood crush, and destroy the competition in Sega’s real-time strategy (RTS) games for glory and prizes. No, you didn’t misread that last part.
Today marks the beginning of Sega’s fifth annual Make War Not Love event. For the next five days, the event’s site will record how long participants play Endless Space 2, Total War: Warhammer II, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III, and/or Company of Heroes 2. If players accumulate a certain amount of playtime, everyone who registers on the site will receive daily prizes. These prizes can include free Sega games, DLC, and/or coupons. Today, if participants amass a total of 500,000 hours, gamers will earn Viking: Battle for Asgard, the Total War: Warhammer – The Grim & The Grave DLC, and 75% off Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – Retribution. Also, as an added bonus, gamers will get The Revenge of the Shinobi and Streets of Rage 2, playable through Sega Mega Drive and Genesis Classics, for free when they sign up.
Make War Not Love might focus on rewarding dedicated RTS gamers, but it is also designed to give fledgling RTS fans a helping hand. All of the games featured in the event (and the original Total War: Warhammer) are discounted, so gamers who already bought sweets for their sweethearts can participate without breaking the bank. Plus, because Sega wants to convince gamers to take part in Make War Not Love, the Total War: Warhammer II – Steps of Isha DLC is completely free.
Not every gamer is into RTS gaming, but signing up for Make War Not Love is free. You don’t even have to play the featured games to win the prizes. At the time of writing this article, players have already amassed well over 133,000 hours, more than one-fourth of the 500,000 hour goal. With luck, gamers can keep up this level of participation for the rest of the event.
