Last week, the Oculus twitter teased an upcoming Insomniac VR title. Today, that title has officially been unveiled.
Titled Stormland, this new Rift game is a VR action-adventure, open-world game that takes place on unexplored islands dotted with strongholds and rare technology for you to discover. According to the blog post announcing the title, the environments are “ever-changing.” Â
Insomniac Games, the studio behind Stormland, who is known for titles such as Ratchet & Clank, Sunset Overdrive and the upcoming PS4-exclusive game, Spider-Man, has dabbled in the VR space before. In 2016, the studio released Edge of Nowhere for the Oculus Rift. It was met with decent reviews–it currently sits at a Metascore on Metacritic of 71, with a User Score of 6.6. It’s easy to imagine that Insomniac has taken what they’ve learned from the Edge of Nowhere experience and applied it to Stormland, but only time will tell.
Along with the announcement, the studio dropped a trailer to showcase what’s to come in Stormland.
According to the blog post, you start the game as a peaceful gardener android. One day, though, The Tempest shatters your body and leaves you lying dormant for centuries. After doing so, you’re back and you must journey through an “ever-changing cloudscape, augmenting yourself to become a heroic fighter, save your friends, and reclaim your world.”Â
In Stormland, you’ll explore a very large environment, of which, you’ll have complete freedom to explore as you wish.
“Bound up cliffs, glide across chasms, and fly through the slipstream at near-terminal velocity,” the blog post reads. “Then detonate explosives, harness electricity, and wield makeshift weapons to overcome titanium sentries and monolithic guardians.”
“Play through a dramatic single-player campaign, or explore forgotten ruins with friends,” the blog post says, seemingly confirming some form of multiplayer in the game.
There is no official release date for Stormland, but the post does say the title will be releasing in 2019.
