Borderlands 2 Returns to Steam’s Most Played List Amid Borderlands 3 Controversy

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

According to GitHyp, Borderlands 2 recently saw a huge spike in player population. For the past several years, the game held steady around ten-thousand concurrent players very month, but on March 28th, the day Gearbox revealed the Borderlands 3 trailer, this population increased significantly. Moreover, this past weekend, the Borderlands 2 concurrent player population exploded to around sixty-thousand players, which was enough to push the game back into the Top Five Most Played Games on Steam list.

As of writing this article, Borderlands 2 has dropped to around thirty-thousand players. The game is currently the thirteenth most played game on Steam, right between Garry’s Mod and Monster Hunter: World. However, we do not know if the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions have seen similar population booms, so the number of gamers currently playing Borderlands 2 might be even larger.

GitHyp believes the Borderlands 3 Epic Games Store exclusivity controversy, the recent Borderlands: The Handsome Collection sale, and the free remastered graphics update for the Borderlands franchise likely played a part in the uptick of popularity.

On a side note, Borderlands, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and Tales from the Borderlands also received significant population boosts around March 28th, although none of them have even come close to breaking the ten-thousand concurrent player mark. Plus, Borderlands 2 has also received a significant increase in Twitch stream viewership.

Since Borderlands 3 will launch for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store, we do not know if the game will impact Borderlands 2’s Steam player population. However, GitHyp is confident Borderlands 3 will be extremely popular when it finally launches on Steam.
