Is There Local Co-Op or Online Multiplayer in Sekiro?

Recommended Videos

Multiplayer has been an integral part of FromSoftware’s recent releases, most notably in the Soulsborne games, dating all the way back to Demon Souls in 2009. From brutal invasions and 1v1 duels to jolly cooperation and sun praising, players around the world have been able to experience From’s mysterious worlds together. In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, we see something different as the game’s developer seeks to expand the boundaries of its player experience. Here’s everything you need to know about whether there’s local co-op or online multiplayer in Sekiro.

The FromSoftware team has made the creative decision to not include any multiplayer component at all in Sekiro. We found this out in June of 2018 when Twinfinite connected with Yasuhiro Kitao, the marketing and communications manager for the game.

According to Kitao, the developers have decided to make Sekiro single-player-only in order to, quite simply, provide a new and evolved experience. Focusing on this one game mode allows the developer to “tell the story in a different way than they have in the past,” Kitao told Twinfinite.

In addition, removing the multiplayer component also removes many technical limitations and balancing requirements that come along with it. In a more recent interview with Game Informer, Kitao elaborated on this idea:

“When creating [single-player] playspaces, we don’t have to take into consideration how players will operate with one another in these maps, or how they may exploit the playspace by cooperating or something like this,” Kitao says. “So it allows us, again, to hone in on the player experience, and really capitalize on that lack of restriction that comes with creating a multiplayer-based game, and let our imagination run wild in these places.”

That’s everything you need to know about local co-op and online multiplayer in Sekiro. For more answers to all of your shinobi-related questions check out our Sekiro Guide Wiki. There you can find all of the tips, tricks, and walkthroughs you need to master every nuance of this complex game.
