How to Use Field Upgrades & What They Do in Modern Warfare

A loadout customization option available during multiplayer matches, Modern Warfare’s Field Upgrades allow you to use special rechargeable skills that can give you a leg-up on the competition.

These range from a munitions box you can use to keep your ammo stocked to a recon drone you can use to spot and tag enemies, cover and more.

You’ll have a fixed number of Field Upgrade options you can choose from when you start, but more will become available as you level up.

Using them is fairly straight forward too. After equipping your Field Upgrade of choice from the Weapons tab in multiplayer, the Upgrade will be active and available for use in your next match, so long as it’s charged.

When you have one charged and ready, press L1 and R1 at the same time on PlayStation 4, or LB and RB at the same time on Xbox One.

Once you’ve done this, the Field Upgrade will be activated and, in many cases, spawn in front of you, requiring one more button prompt. For example, the munitions box will spawn with the above controls, but you’ll need to press the Square or X button to activate its effects.

As such, if it spawns in front of you, walk up to it and then press the necessary button to activate it.

So, to recap:

  1. Press L1 and R1 (PS4) or LB and RB (Xbox One)

This will activate your Field Upgrade, typically spawning it in front of you.

  2. Walk up to the Upgrade and Activate it

This is usually done with a quick button prompt.
