There are a few different parts here that we have to go over. First, we’ll take a look at obtaining Dragon Hearts, then we’ll focus on what they can be used to do. Once you obtain a Dragon Heart, you can talk to Bloody Finger Hunter Yura and he’ll give you a hint for where to bring the item. But we’ll give you all that information down below.

How to Get Dragon Hearts in Elden Ring

In order to obtain a Dragon Heart, all you need to do is kill a dragon. This is certainly much easier said than done. But if you just stay on your horse and learn their attack patterns then you should be able to slay a dragon even fairly early on in the game.

The first one you’re likely to encounter is Flying Dragon Agheel. As its name would suggest, the dragon can fly and it can be encountered while exploring Agheel Lake. Around the middle of the lake, you’ll find a group of enemies. As you approach these weaklings, the dragon will come flying in and kill all of them. Don’t wander too close or you’ll get caught up in Agheel’s flames and suffer the same fate as the enemies.

If you’re still in the early stages of the game, then this battle might be time-consuming. But your patience and bravery will be rewarded once you defeat a dragon. Besides the bunch of runes, you’ll also get one Dragon Heart.

What Dragon Hearts Are Used For

As was mentioned before, Bloody Finger Hunter Yura will tell you what to do after you beat Agheel. But you’re likely here because you don’t want to search for him. Plus it’s a pretty straightforward answer. All you need to do is go to the altar at the Church of Dragon Communion and exchange the heart for a dragon-based Incantation. That part is simple, but getting there is only slightly more complicated.

The Church of Dragon Communion is located on a small island off the western coast of Limgrave. You obviously can’t cross the water, so you’ll need to enter a cave on the coast. In this cave, you’ll run into a boss battle. Do not use the quick return to the entrance after defeating this boss.

The cave you enter and the island are labeled with green markers on the map below:

Continue through the cave using the opening opposite the side you entered the boss arena. When you exit the other side of the cave, you’ll be on the island that has the Church of Dragon Communion. When you enter the church you’ll find a giant dragon statue with an altar that has an eternally burning flame. Go up to the altar and offer up your Dragon Heart to learn a new Incantation.

Each one of these Incantations can be obtained by placing one Dragon Heart at the altar in the Church of Dragon Communion:

  • Dragonfire – Channels dragon to spew flame breath.
  • Dragonclaw – Channels dragon to rend foes with dragon claws.
  • Dragonmaw – Channels a dragon to bite the foes in front of the caster.

The dragon-based Incantations are extremely powerful but also have lengthy animations that can leave you wide open to attacks.

Time needed: 30 minutes
