15 Tiny Details in Red Dead Redemption 2 that Will Blow Your Mind

Red Dead Redemption 2 is full of surprises. Whether they be things you can do, or secrets to find, the world is a mystery to be uncovered. Here are 15 tiny details in Red Dead Redemption 2 that will blow your mind.

Muddy Horses

Arthur’s horse actually gets dirty over time if you don’t clean it. As you explore Red Dead 2’s world, you can see the mud build up on its body. It doesn’t affect how other horses see your horse though, not like when other people see Arthur when he’s muddy.

Arthur Needs to Wash

Just as your horse does, Arthur can get muddy over time. However, you can wash off the muck easily by going into the water and splashing around a bit. With hair length, beard scruffiness, and muddy clothes all noticeable, there’s a lot to keep a track of when ensuring that Arthur looks presentable. You also don’t just get dirty all over when you fall into mud, with the part of Arthur’s body that he fell onto getting muddy. So, if he falls on his side, only that side will be caked in mud.

Different Crafting Animations

You will see different crafting animations at the campfire, which change depending on what you’re crafting. Cooking sees you putting the meat over the flame, crafting ammo sees you sharpening the metal, and making coffee has you pouring it into a cup. It’s not just a case of bashing at a wooden block like you often see in other games.

Different Hunting Animations

Also, when you’re hunting, different animations play when you skin certain animals. For smaller animals such as rabbits, Arthur holds them and rips whatever is useful to him straight out of it, but for mid-sized animals like deer and wolves, he skins them on the ground.

Dogs Remember You

If you see a dog wandering around town, you can inspect it, pet it, and praise it. Then, the next time you come into that same town, that very same dog will come bounding over to you, wagging its tail and saying hello.

Check the Time

Red Dead Redemption 2’s world looks pretty stunning at all times of the day. Whether you’re exploring the plains with the sun at its highest point, or skulking about in the darkness of night, there’s plenty to take in. However, if you want to check what the time is exactly, you can. If you press Options/Menu to enter the pause menu, you’ll see a little pocket watch in the top left corner of the screen. This pocket watch tells you the in-game time of day, so you’ll know when Arthur should really be asleep. Keep in mind, however, that the pocket watch needs to be purchased.

Pretend You’re in An Old-School Western Movie

One of the iconic elements of an old-school Western is the way the movie’s star spins his revolver around his finger before holstering it. Thankfully, you can look just as cool as them in Red Dead Redemption 2. All you need to do is double tap L1/LB and Arthur will give his pistols a quick spin before putting them out of harms way. Once you’ve done it one time, you’ll want to do it while you’re just walking around. Because it looks cool!

Fortune Tellers Follow the Story

Throughout the game, you’ll occasionally meet a fortune teller. If you pay them to tell you your fortune, what they say will be in the context of where you are in the story at that particular time. Therefore, what they say to you at the start of the game will be completely different to what they’d say near the end.

Your Horse Doesn’t Like Tight Spaces

If you force your horse to run at full speed through a tight gap, such as mountain trails, it’ll freak out as a way to stop you doing it. Keep that in mind as you’re running from bandits.

Arthur’s Relationship With His Horses Changes

If you keep the same horse in Red Dead Redemption 2 for a long time, Arthur will begin to treat it differently. Once you hit the max bond, he’ll begin to speak to his horse like its his child.

Locals Don’t Like It If You’re Scruffy

If you let your hair grow and grow to the point that he looks ridiculous, people will shout things at you as you walks through towns. Also, if you wear a mask or something that hides your face, vendors will refuse to serve you.

Arthur Organises His Horse

If, after you’ve been hunting for a while, put an animal carcass on your horse and then you put the skin, the animation changes to Arthur shoving the skin under the carcass, rather than laying it on top. This will keep the skin from blowing away and blood from dropping onto your horse too much.

Your Horse Doesn’t Like Carrying Things

Your horse doesn’t get angry while it’s carrying things, but when you take things off it gets happier and friendlier towards you.

Gang Members Can Save You From Prison

Since you’re going about the wild west killing people and stealing whatever’s in front of you, you’ll inevitably end up in prison a few times. However, it’s possible that you won’t serve the full sentence. Rather than seeing Arthur in a cell, you could be treated to a cutscene of a gang member saving you.

Shops Aren’t Open 24 Hours a Day

If you go to a shop to buy something, it might not be open. Most of them will have a sign on the door saying whether it’s open or closed. Simply wait until it says ‘Open’ and you’ll be able to buy what you need.
