Riven

Zed
Zed is most famous for his high-level play - notably being played by Faker in professional matches, who shows some incredible skill on the champion. Zed is capable of dealing heavy damage in a very short space of time, and oftentimes you'll die before you even know it. His kit is built around shadows, which he can then teleport into, letting him dash around. His shadows mimic his actions, meaning they'll throw shurikens and attack when he does, so don't get get caught out of position.
Leblanc
The dashiest champions seem to be the best ones - we're starting to notice a pattern forming. Leblanc can easily dupe foes with her kit, that lets her dash around and create clones of herself, dealing immense damage in the process. She's not as crazy powerful as she used to be, but you'll still groan if you see yourself matched up against her in a draft pick.
Fizz
Fizz, the Summoners Rift's very own Tidal Trickster, has been known to cause many a problem for players who just can't seem to catch him. His slippery skillset means that he often escapes the clutches of enemies with ease, simply jumping out of a gank or teamfight when he gets low. He's also capable of using this jump ability to damage and slow enemies greatly, and has the ability to completely nuke players if they get caught out. His ultimate ability throws a shark at the enemies which knocks them up, does a lot of damage, and makes them more vulnerable to attack, meaning Fizz is perfect at assassinating single targets.
Thresh
Thresh is without a doubt the most versatile support League of Legends has to offer. Three out of four of his abilities apply crowd-control in some form or another, and all of his abilities sync up brilliantly, allowing you to capitalise on a gank or catch out enemy stragglers. His hook is a surefire way to take out the enemy ADC, and will a lot of the time mean your ADC gets another kill on the scoreboard. On top of that, there are countless ways to utilise his W ability, which throws out a lantern. It can be used to grant vision, pull enemies to safety, execute an objective steal, and it can even be targeted by teleport and some movement abilities.
Darius
Darius is a classic champion at this point, and has always been known to dunk on the competition with his giant axe. He's capable of heavy damage in both the early and late game, provided you make strategic use of his passive, which applies bleeding stacks on the enemy with every ability you cast. When you max out the stacks on an enemy, you can drop your ultimate on their heads for maximum damage, oftentimes dealing the killing blow.
Katarina
Katarina has fallen on some hard times as of late, but is still incredibly viable to play as in the mid lane as an assassin. Katarina's kit is built around her blades, which she can throw at the enemy. Once thrown, the blade will fall on the floow and she can dash to it with her E, resetting the dash and allowing you to get some good damage off. There are many situations where multiple blades are on the ground, and you can dash between them to deal heavy damage to the enemy. If you can't quite kill them, use your ultimate to deal continuous damage to all in a radius around her. In the right hands, Katarina is a force to be reckoned with.
Janna
Janna is another extremely versatile support champion, with high mobility and crowd-control. She moves a good bit faster than most champions at full speed and out of combat, letting her roam a little to help out the entire team, no matter where they are on the map. On top of this, she has a powerful slow and the ability to knock enemies up for a long time, potentially rendering them useless for seconds at a time. She stacks well with champions like Yasuo, who can capitalise on this knockup and turn matches around. Her ultimate heals all allies in a wide radius whilst knocking enemies away, making it useful in many different situations.
Sona
Sona is a champion not everyone plays, but everyone knows about. She's a really capable support, with the ability to heal her team for good amounts, speed her own team up, slow the enemy down, and stun massive groups of enemies, forcing them to dance for a brief moment. On top of this, she also does a good bit of damage - Sona really is an asset to every team she's on, no matter the composition.
Soraka
Soraka is useful when the allied team doesn't have much in the way of healing, or there are multiple vulnerable champions on the team. Her healing is almost second-to-none, and at the expense of her own health, she can bring a low ally back to full in seconds. She's also got a tricky to hit, but powerful snare ability that comes in handy to pick off one or two enemies at a time. Her ultimate also heals an entire team at once, no matter where they are on a map, allowing you to get out of a pinch and potentially turn a game around.
Blitzcrank
You aren't a League of Legends player if you haven't been picked off by an extraordinarily accurate Blitz pull. Blitzcrank is something of a niche pick, but when players utilise him well, he makes a team ten times better. As a support, Blitzcrank can pull enemy champions from afar right to you, which means accuracy is your biggest ally here. In the late game, if you pull an ADC into your team, then that's practically the team-fight won, and potentially the match. If the pull isn't enough, then he also has a single-target knock-up, and an area-of-effect attack that silences everyone in a radius around you. Blitzcrank is perfect for some teams, but make sure you're accurate, or else you'll just be a burden.
Twisted Fate
Twisted Fate is another staple of the League of Legends, being one of the most prominent champions that helped form the game's identity. He's also not the strongest right now, but his uniqueness and incredibly satisfying playstyle makes him arguably one of the best. One of his abilities lets him cycle between an attack that grants him mana, slows in an AoE, or stuns a single target. When his abilities are grouped up correctly, Twisted Fate can completely nuke single targets with ease. His ultimate also reveals every enemy on the map and allows him to teleport across most of the map in an instant, allowing him to escape or make surprise attacks easily.
Nidalee
Nidalee makes use of a spear that she throws to make an attack. Her Q ability throws the spear a great distance, and the further it goes before it hits someone, the more damage it does. Couple this with her ability to transform into a tiger and completely swap out her skillset, and you've got a ton of abilities that allow you to capitalise on a spear hit and decimate the enemy team. Nidalee works best against single targets, but during the teamfight phase she can poke enemies down from afar.
Annie
Once again, Annie is a classic champion that's helped mould League of Legends into what it is today. This fire magic-wielding girl makes use of a stun that she can use with every fifth ability - everything she does will likely centre around the power of this stun. In the late game, Annie can wait until the stun is ready, and then drop every single ability onto the enemy ADC's head, killing them instantly.
Lulu
Lulu is a support that's not going to let herself be pushed around. Lulu makes prolific use of her fairy, Pix, which augments her abilities and basic attacks, letting her do just enough damage to make her a force to be reckoned with. Another of her abilities, named polymorph, transforms an enemy into a squirrel for a few seconds, shutting down their use of abilities and only allowing them to move slowly. Lulu is an extremely viable champion in many situations, making her one of the best League of Legends has to offer.
Gangplank
Everyone's favourite pirate made his comeback with a rework just over 2 years ago, and nobody has looked back since. Gangplank places barrels in the world around him, and relies on these barrels to position the enemy just how he wants them. If they walk into the radius of these barrels, Gangplank is capable of dealing devastating damage, and possibly killing. He's got his own healing ability, too, which removes all CC, and a global ultimate that can zone enemies and save teammates.
Twitch
Twitch is an annoying little ADC who is capable of completely disappearing from your view, only to reappear moments later and shred you and your team to pieces. His kit is centred around an ability that allows him to cloak and sneak around, completely unseen, which allows him to position and then unleash hell on the enemy. He is capable of poisoning his enemies too, adding an extra layer of annoyance to his kit.
Maokai
Maokai, the Rift's resident talking tree, has the power to stunlock enemies and displace entire teams, if he's positioning well. His strong damage and heavy CC make him powerful in almost any team composition. If you're playing against him, make sure to stay under towers or hope he gets a little too aggressive, lest you'll suffer the wrath of his branches.
Tristana
Tristana's mobility is her defining characteristic. This Yordle has the ability to fly in and out of danger, applying bombs and detonating turrets and teams with her insane range and attack speed. Unless you can catch her out, good luck fighting against this trickster.
