Master Chief Collection

Precision shooting your friend across the map with a Spartan Laser is all the more satisfying when you get to see their reaction in person. The Master Chief Collection’s 100+ multiplayer maps, mean the amount of variation you have access to is immense. Not only that, if you don’t fancy jumping into an arena then you can play through the entirety of Master Chief’s story from start to end (with ODST thrown in for good measure as well), all with four player split screen co-op.

Overcooked 1 & 2

To say Overcooked is a stressful game would be beyond an understatement, it’s a game which relies solely on both great communication and skill. You’ll be shouting at your friends as you desperately try and clean that last dish, or chop that final tomato and by the end, you’ll almost surely be the best cooks you can be. Whether you’ll still all be friends afterward though, you’ll have to wait and see…

Minecraft

Minecraft is an open world playground where the only true limit is your imagination. Working together in up to four player split screen co-op, you must craft blocks, defeat monsters and explore dungeons. If you put your mind to it you can make almost anything, especially in the games creative mode. There’s a reason why Minecraft is one of the best-selling games of all time and when you sink a few hours in yourself, you’ll see exactly why.

Cuphead

Do not let Cuphead’s cutesy, hand-drawn art style deceive you, as this is far from a children’s game. Cuphead is, in fact, a boss rush game disguised as a 1940’s Disney animation. From giant carrots to clowns and even ghost pirates, Cuphead turns child-friendly concepts into the stuff of nightmares. It’s an incredibly difficult journey to take on alone, but bring a friend over in local co-op and things might just get a little bit easier.

LEGO

Whether it be Lego Star Wars’ brilliant recreation of a galaxy far far away or Lego Marvel Superheros, insanely huge roster of character’s, every Lego game has at least one factor that makes it stand out from the crowd. But as a series in general, the easy pickup and play co-op, specifically designed co-op puzzles and the incredibly fun worlds the series takes place in, make the Lego series one of the best co-op experiences you can find.

Sonic Mania

Sonic Mania took the iconic blue hedgehog back to his roots, putting aside his 3D outings and returning to the glory days of 2D. By remixing old stages and adding new ones, Sonic Mania simultaneously created a feeling of nostalgia and originality, making it a joy to play.

Just like in the classic Sonic outings co-op makes a triumphant return, with a whole host of Sonics friends on call to help him once again defeat Dr. Eggman.

FIFA

FIFA 18 is the closest thing you can get to football without actually playing real football. The ability to play with four players all on one screen it makes it one of the most perfect couch co-op games you can buy. With a wide range of modes and ways to play together, FIFA 18 can easily supply any house with a bit of football fever.

Rocket league

If you’re not interested in kicking a ball with your foot, perhaps you might like to hit one with a car. If so, Rocket League will solve that specific requirement, all with the added bonus of jet boosts, flips, powerups and wall climbing. Football has never been this exciting, or this dangerous.

Rayman Legends

Rayman Legends is the gorgeous sequel to the series reboot, Rayman Origins. It takes everything that was great about the first and improves on it, increasing the number of levels, co-op functionality, improving the graphics and of course adding in a football mode. This incredibly fun action platformer only gets better when you throw in a few extra players, making it a brilliant local co-op game.

CoD Zombies

The Call of Duty series has a stellar multiplayer mode, but recent years have seen a recurring mode appear in all of the Call of Duty games, Zombies. In this, up to 4 players can jump in a game together and take on an oncoming horde. COD WW2 saw the game take us back to Nazi-occupied Germany, Black Ops 2 saw a level take place in a high-rise tower and Infinite Warfare saw the mode get an 80’s makeover. Each entry has its own take on the mode, but no matter what its always great co-op fun.

A Way Out

If Prison Break taught us anything, it’s that breaking out of prison is incredibly hard and bringing on a friend for the ride simplifies things tenfold. A Way Out knows that and uses it to its advantage, forcing the entire game to be played in split screen co op (both online and off). You’ll be solving puzzles and taking out guards, all while working together on the same screen, in what is all around a truly different co op experience. This list of the best local co-op Xbox One games wouldn’t be complete without it.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime

Set in a neon-drenched version of space, you must work with a team of people to control all aspects of spaceship. From movement to shields every position needs to be manned. If you have good communication you’ll be taking out space bears and flying through meteor showers, its a fantastically rewarding game but it takes a good team to pull off the perfect mission.

Spelunky

If you’re looking to channel your inner Indiana Jones, then Spelunky might just be for you. Digging through various caves, looking for the treasure you must try and work your way to the very bottom of the caves that stand in your way. Together with a friend, you can take on the harsh depths of Spelunky’s caves and with it nab that glorious treasure you worked so hard to find.

Binding of Isaac

Working your way through the never-ending underground tunnels of Isaacs house you must defeat giant worms, spiders and flies all in a desperate attempt to escape your murderous mother. To make things a bit easier you can tag in up to 3 friends, all of which can help you take down the creatures that stand in your way. With hundreds of items and randomly generated levels, The Binding of Isaac will be a completely different experience every time you play it.

Borderlands Handsome Collection

The world of Pandora is not a pleasant one, it’s ladened with giant beasts, evil dictators, and shit talking robots. But Pandora does withhold a lot of fun, it’s full of luscious sprawling environments that are stuffed to the brim with treasure.

The Borderlands Handsome Collection combines the last two Borderlands games and remasters them for current-gen consoles. You can play through both campaigns in up to four player local co op and together you might just survive what Pandora has to offer.

Octodad

When the concept of your game revolves around an octopus pretending to be a human, it’s unsurprising that its co-op is just as weird. Each player (with up to four players local co-op) controls a limb of the octopus, meaning every player must work together to try and complete the complex tasks that lie ahead. As you attempt to traverse environments like aquariums and supermarkets, Octodad becomes a true test of communication.

Diablo 3

Diablo 3 is a game made to be played in co op, this vast RPG can be fully experienced with a friend and it’s all the better for it. You’ll be working together completing quests and getting better loot all to show off to each other. Blizzard has a knack for creating incredibly compelling, lore-driven, loot based games and Diablo 3 is no different.

Castle Crashers

Castle Crashers is a side scrolling beat-em-up that harks back to a time of games gone by. With a wonderfully crisp art style, Castle Crashers is a game that still looks amazing 10 years after it came out. But Castle Crashers isn’t just about the art style, it’s tight controls and nostalgic gameplay make this feel like an arcade classic from the 80’s. When you jump in with a few mates on local co-op you’ll start to see exactly why going to the arcade and playing games like this was so much fun.

Star Wars Battlefront 2

While the original series of Battlefront games featured a fantastic split-screen co op mode, which allowed you to play out infamous battles in the games multiplayer the new series removed it (*nudge nudge* EA). All is not lost though, as instead, EA added in a horde-like mode in which you visit classic locations and work together to defeat waves of enemies. With a game as beautiful as this, it’s hard not to enjoy yourself, especially when you get into some intense, movie-like firefights.

Gears of War 4

The Gears of War games have all featured a brilliant co-op campaign system, allowing you and 3 friends to play through the entire game together. Of course, Gears of War 4 is no different to that. You can experience every detail of J.D Fenix’s story together on once couch. Few triple-A games offer a split screen experience like this and it’s an incredibly welcome feature to an already great game.

Towerfall ascension

Towerfall Ascension is a arena brawler in which everyone has a bow and arrow and one hit kills you. What follows are intense matches of across the arena sniping, close calls and fast paced action. Anyone can pick up and play it in a few minutes and its wide variety of levels (along with its 4 player local co op) make it one of the best local co-op Xbox One games.

Goat simulator

In Goat Simulator, it’s possible to find an object that will let you rain down dead goats from the sky at the touch of a button. Its an obscure game, but its incredibly self-aware. If you want to experience all the chaos Goat Simulator has to offer you can do so entirely in split screen co-op. This means if you and a friend have always wanted to ragdoll off the top of a crane while wearing a jetpack, its all possible in Goat Simulators split-screen mode.

Resident Evil Revelations 2

A scary survival horror game is hard to come by, one you can play in local co op is even harder to find. Resident Evil Revelations 2 is exactly that though, following on from the first spin offs return to survival horror, Revelations 2 puts you in control of Claire Redfield and Moira Burton. Together with a friend you can figure out the mystery of what happened to them in between Resident Evil 5 & 6 and get terrified along the way!

Rock Band 4

While FIFA simulates football and Goat Simulator shows you what it’s like to be a goat, Rock Band 4 simulates exactly what it’s like to be a in a band. Whether you want to play guitar, drums or even sing, Rock Band will give you the full Rockstar experience. Also, with over 65 songs (that’s without even touching the DLC songs) there’s plenty of choice on offer for what you want to rock out too. It’ll seem like you and your friends will be on tour in no time.

7 Days to Die

Survival Horror game 7 Days to Die, truly puts its emphasis on the word survival. Set in a randomly generated world, every time you and a friend must work together to survive the oncoming zombie hordes. You’ll have to think about your water supplies, food and of course your overall health, all while being attacked by zombies in co op. Who knew the apocalypse could be so dangerous.
