15 Gaming Franchises That Didn’t Even Exist When Final Fantasy XV Was First Announced

A lot has happened in the 10 years since Final Fantasy XV was first announced. Many games have been released, including several franchises that are now some of the largest, most influential franchises in all of gaming.

Saints Row originally launched August 29, 2006. The series has seen a total of five entries to date.

Gears of War first launched onto the Xbox 360 on November 7, 2006. There have been four games in the series so far, with a fifth on the way.

BioShock originally hit our homes on August 21, 2007. There are three games in the series now, with an HD collection rumored to be on the way.

Portal first launched as part of The Orange Box on October 7, 2007. It has one sequel, Portal 2, that released in April of 2011.

The first Assassin’s Creed launched on November 13, 2007. The mega-hit franchise now has over two dozen games in total.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune hit the PlayStation 3 November 19, 2007. The franchise now has five titles and an HD collection of the three numbered games, with Uncharted 4 just around the corner.

Mass Effect launched November 20, 2007. The series now features three numbered titles as well as three mobile spin-offs. A new title, Andromeda, is expected in 2017.

Rock Band brought the concert to your living room November 20, 2007. There are currently eight games in the franchise, with Rock Band VR on the horizon.

LittleBigPlanet charmed audiences for the first time on October 28, 2008. Including all spin-offs and sequels, there are currently eight games in the LBP franchise.

Left 4 Dead breathed fresh life into co-op zombie survival games on November 17, 2008. There has only been one sequel since then, but a third game has often been rumored.

Borderlands took players to the world of Pandora on October 20, 2009. There are now five games in the franchise, with Borderlands 3 reportedly in production.

Dragon Age: Origins launched on November 3, 2009. Two more mainline titles in the series have since been released, plus three additional spin-offs.

Dead Island originally launched on September 6, 2011. There are three games in the franchise, with Dead Island 2 currently in production.

Dark Souls first released on October 4, 2011. Dark Souls III, launching this April, will mark the third title in the series.

Minecraft has become a worldwide phenomenon since it launched on November 18, 2011. There have been no sequels, but the game is playable on 14 separate platforms.
