10 Ways Spyro Reignited Trilogy Revitalizes the Classics

An Unreal Coat of New Paint – Ways Spyro Reignited Trilogy Revitalizes the Classics

The biggest change brought with the Reignited Trilogy is the gorgeous remade graphics Toys for Bob has brought. Crafted with Unreal Engine 4, the Reignited games somehow manage to evoke the same feelings the original Spyro games did, while looking completely new.

Spyro’s various worlds looks incredibly lush and vibrant with life. Bugs buzz around the grass and weeds, a beautiful sunset is off in the distance, and leaves float down in the wind. Spyro, more than ever, looks like a cartoon in motion.

Reimagined Dragons and Characters – Ways Spyro Reignited Trilogy Revitalizes the Classics

Outside of the graphical overhaul, all of the dragons and characters in Spyro have been reimagined for modern day. In the first Spyro game the various dragons you save all have incredibly distinct designs, and it’s a blast to see how quirky each one is as they pop up.

In later games characters like Hunter the Cheetah and Elorah sport robust new designs, all fitting to the whimsical aesthetic Toys for Bob has implemented. Even Spyro himself looks better than ever, with fluid animations, and some adorable animations and facial expressions.

Fantastic Tiny Details – Ways Spyro Reignited Trilogy Revitalizes the Classics

Even the PS1 Spyro games were packed with fun little details and easter eggs, but the Reignited Trilogy is on an entirely different level. When Spyro breathes fire it scorches a ring of grass immediately surrounding him. You can even scorch trees and plants with your breath which will burn and then lose their leaves.

There are countless little details like this; dust particles shimmering in the sunlight, reflections off of water on ceilings, and much more. If you take a few minutes to just stop and look around you’re bound to find these kinds of details in the Reignited Trilogy.

A Better More Adaptive Camera – Ways Spyro Reignited Trilogy Revitalizes the Classics

The Spyro Reignited trilogy feels like it could be a new game released today, and not a remake of games nearly two decades old. Having the right analog stick for the camera makes a huge difference, and you can also hit L2 to instantly swing the camera behind Spyro.

There’s also a new option in the menu for an active camera, that will keep the camera moving behind Spyro as he charges, making it much easier to see what’s going on.

New Control Options – Ways Spyro Reignited Trilogy Revitalizes the Classics

Controlling Spyro feels as good as it did 20 years ago, and jumping into any of the games in the trilogy will instantly feel familiar to any fan. While the basic controls still feel fine, there are minor tweaks made between two different control schemes, Reignited and Retro.

Reignited controls will let you keep Spyro’s breath attack on the right trigger and that helpful camera center on the left trigger. Meanwhile, if you want the pure Spyro experience you can still choose Retro. Even with that, however, the natural improvement of the DualShock 4 or Xbox One controller make this the best-feeling Spyro yet.

Trophies – Ways Spyro Reignited Trilogy Revitalizes the Classics

Obviously, the Reignited Trilogy adds brand new trophies into the mix for Spyro, which is good enough, but the way the games do their trophies are even better. These aren’t just trophies you get for beating levels, but most of them have specific requirements or tasks you’ll need to seek out.

The trophies of the trilogy provide some fun incentive for fans to jump in and play again, or even more content for newcomers to wade through.

Sparx Has a Gem Pointer Move – Ways Spyro Reignited Trilogy Revitalizes the Classics

Gems are that vital resource in Spyro games, and there are literally thousands to collect across each adventure. if you’re looking to 100% every level finding all those gems can be tricky. In the original games you could unlock Sparx’s gem finder ability, letting you press a combination of buttons to have him point at the nearest gem.

In the Reignited Trilogy, however, Sparx has this move equipped from the very start on the L3 button. Any time, anywhere, hit L3 and Sparx will point at the closest gem or treasure.

Reignited Soundtrack – Ways Spyro Reignited Trilogy Revitalizes the Classics

Just like the graphical overhaul, the soundtrack of all three Spyro games have been remixed and remastered. As phenomenal as the music was before, Steward Copelan’ds OST sounds better than ever. Luckily, if you want to switch back to the Retro music you can do that through the menu.

If that wasn’t enough, Copeland even composed an entirely new theme for the trilogy.

Re-Recorded Dialogue – Ways Spyro Reignited Trilogy Revitalizes the Classics

Dialogue from all three Spyro games has been entirely re-recorded, and in some cases, there are even new voice actors for characters, like Hunter. These performances are definitely a cut above the original games, which used voice acting when it was still a relatively new feature to gaming.

The best part about the new acting, however, is that Tom Kenny, the voice of Spyro in Ripto’s Rage and Year of the Dragon, returned to voice new lines for all three games in the Reignited Trilogy.

It’s Easier Than Ever to Revisit Levels – Ways Spyro Reignited Trilogy Revitalizes the Classics

A great new feature in the Reignited Trilogy makes it super easy to jump between levels you’ve visited whenever you want. In all three games you can hit the touchpad, or the menu button, to bring up the guidebook. From there you can select any level you’ve already played an instantly jump to it, no matter where you are or what you’re doing.

This feature comes in handy especially in Ripto’s Rage and Year of the Dragon, as you unlock abilities and characters that will help you explore more of previous levels.
