5 Video Game Urban Legends That Had Players Searching Endlessly

FINDING MEW

Recommended Videos

One of the great legends in gaming were the many different ways to find Mew within Pokemon Red and Blue. The legends grew as children and adult minds went wild with rumors; rumors that weren’t so easily debunked as they are now with the presence of social media.

One of the widely claimed truths of obtaining the coveted Mew was that the legendary Pokemon could be found hiding under a truck. The location of the truck was out of place and nobody could decide what the actual point of this truck was. So it must lead to Mew, right? The theory was that players needed to acquire the Hidden Move Surf ability, which couldn’t be obtained until late in the game. Players would then need to swim to the furthest side of the harbor, locate the truck and then use Strength to push the truck out of the way. It sounded convincing and many players fell for it.

Despite these rumors being debunked, thanks to countless hours of players attempting them, there is a way to find Mew within the game. Albeit, through glitches players have discovered.

BIGFOOT LOCATION

The Grand Theft Auto series has become a host for a slew of urban legends in gaming. Primarily because the series is outrageous enough that the legends don’t seem that ridiculous. A game like San Andreas must have a Bigfoot hiding around somewhere. Alas, as with real life, no one can provide proof, although screenshots will tell you otherwise.

Big Foot is even credited in the Thanks To section of the manual. However, this was later revealed to be a nickname for an employee at Rockstar Games, as the same name can be found in the manual for Vice City.

Terry Donovan put rumors to rest in 2005 by saying, “There is no Bigfoot, just like in real life.”Although, some gamers remain unconvinced and still claim to have found Bigfoot lurking around Mount Chiliad.

DOC’S DELOREAN

Great Scott! Is there a time-traveling DeLorean hiding within a cave in Red Dead Redemption? As all legends do, it seems far-fetched. Rockstar hiding a DeLorean within the Red Dead map to mirror the events of Back to the Future Part III seemed too exciting of a prospect to not be true.

What would happen if you found it? Was it drive-able? Could you travel into the future and end up in San Andreas? Nobody knew for sure, but everyone wanted to find out. Here’s hoping Rockstar took notice and planted the classic time-traveling car into Red Dead Redemption 2.

THE RUNNING MAN

The Running Man is a character you find near Hyrule Field in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and will later challenge players to a race to the bridge in the Lost Woods. The myth was that it is actually possible to beat him in the race.

One myth is that you can beat him as Young Link. You can become the child version again by putting the master sword into the pedestal of time. People have even tried to use a Gameshark to freeze the timer for an advantage, but nothing can stop the Running Man from defeating you. What is most aggravating is when you lose by a mere second in the race. There is a reason why the Running Man is modeled after a Greek Olympian.

JUMPING THE FLAG POLE

Urban legends in gaming have been here since the dawn of video games, so why should one of the greatest games of all time be any different? Now, this particular legend is the only one on this list that turned out to be true.

The original Super Mario Bros. featured a flag pole at the end of each level. The higher players landed on top of the pole, the more points you achieved toward your gamer score. Many players claimed it was possible to jump so high that you would clear the pole entirely and land on the other side of the castle, but you had to time the jump just perfectly.

Players tried and failed for years, but it was recently revealed that it is indeed possible. In an episode of Pop Fiction, YouTube channel GameTrailers showed players how it’s done. You can jump the flag pole in World 3-3, due to the high reaching platform. So what happens when you do? Unfortunately, not a whole lot. You are free to continue running as far as your heart’s desire, which is actually just until the level clock runs out. Mario dies and you start the level again. It just happens to be a weird thing that you can do.
