How to Add & Change PS5 SSD Storage

Let’s first start by explaining a few important details that for now, are temporary. The PS5 will feature the ability to add and/or change out storage for the PS5’s SSD.

However, at launch, this option is not available. You are stuck with the 1 TB provided by the launch day PS5’s storage and will not be able to expand it in any way. As a result, for now, you’ll need to get into the habit of deleting games off of your hard drive that you’re not playing anymore if you have a lot of games downloaded.

That said, the feature will eventually be added likely through an update to the PS5 firmware at some point in the not too distant future. When it is added, you’ll be able to buy and swap in internal M.2 SSDs.

Sony will likely direct users to storage options that are confirmed to work within the PS5, so don’t try buying anything just yet until Sony announces the addition of the feature otherwise you may buy an SSD that is not compatible.

When this feature gets added, we’ll add instructions on how to change and install your new PS5. In the meantime, you can go ahead and transfer data over from your PS4.

That’s all for now on changing and installing new PS5 SSD storage. Check back later once Sony patches the functionality in!
