Developed by Koei Tecmo and Omega Force, Age of Calamity is a new musou-style game that’s set in the Legend of Zelda universe. More specifically, it serves as a prequel to Breath of the Wild and follows the story of Link, Zelda, and the four champions during the war against Calamity Ganon and the guardians. During most missions in the game, you’ll be able to have a party of up to three characters at once and you can switch between them any time you want. Some of the side challenges may only allow you to have two characters at a time, while others lock you in to only one of them.
To change characters, all you have to do is press up or down on the d-pad to cycle through them. This will allow you to instantly swap to whichever other characters you currently have in your party, and you’ll be able to play as them while the AI takes care of the rest of the party.
This can be extremely helpful when your characters are scatted all over the large map, and you need to secure your objectives quickly. The AI actually also does a pretty decent job of taking care of your characters as well; throughout my time with the game, I’ve found that the AI is largely capable of keeping your characters alive so you don’t have to worry about them dying when you’re not in control.
When choosing a mission to embark on, right before you select the Onward option, you’ll also be able to adjust your party and swap in the characters you want to take with you.
Simply press the B button on the character selection option, then swap out your characters until you have the party setup that you want to take into the mission with you. While on the world map, you can also change your party setup by pressing the + button to enter the character menu.
