The PS5 has been very hard to find all over the world, and Japan certainly is no exception. Yet, the console appears to have passed a local sales milestone.
According to Famitsu’s estimates (which are pretty much the only ones left after Media Create has stopped publishing its numbers a while ago), the PlayStation 5 has passed a million units sold in the country.
To be precise, this is the breakdown among models as of September 5, 2021.
- PlayStation 5: 847,421 units
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition: 165,235 units
Shortages of the console have been a constant factor in Japan like in the rest of the world. The situation has prompted local retailers to hold lotteries every time they are posed to receive a shipment.
Those who win the lottery, earn the privilege to purchase a PS5.
According to the latest official figures from Sony, the PS5 has shipped 10.1 million units worldwide as of June 30. The company’s estimates mention 10 million units sold to customers.
It’s worth mentioning that Famitsu’s estimates are also unofficial, and they’re compiled via the analysis of market data through a sample of retailers. That being said, they shouldn’t be far off.
The next official shipment count should come soon when Sony releases its next financials at the beginning of November.
