Phantasy Star Online 2 AKA PSO2 is coming to North America with its own dedicated servers (no more having to jerry-rig the Japanese version). Fans across North America (starting with Xbox One and PC owners) will be able to jump into Sega’s popular online action-RPG.
If you’re here though, you’re probably wondering if there is splitscreen local co-op multiplayer in PSO2 so you can play with a friend. Here’s what you need to know.
Splitscreen Local Co-op Multiplayer in PSO2
PSO2 definitely is a multiplayer game. You can join up with groups of friends or strangers and take on various missions to level up your characters, learn new skills, and get new loot. It’s a simple formula that has worked since the original Phantasy Star Online game rocked our worlds back on the Sega Dreamcast.
That said, PSO2 is strictly an online experience. While you can opt for an isolated experience online if you want, you can’t invite a friend over to your house to take part in some splitscreen local co-op multiplayer.
In order to play with others in PSO2, they will have to be on their own console or PC and playing their own version of the game. Nothing stops you from setting up next to someone you want to play with, but you can’t play on the same monitor or TV splitscreen style.
Sorry if that comes as a bummer to local co-op splitscreen fans. We hate to be the bearer of bad news. But now, at least you have your answer and you can gauge your expectations accordingly.
That’s all you need to know about splitscreen local co-op multiplayer in PSO2 or its lack thereof. If you’re looking for a primer for the next beta for Phantasy Star Online 2, check out this guide to get you going and be sure to take a look at our most recent impressions of Sega’s online action RPG.
