It’s quite evident that 2019 was the year of the Nintendo Switch in Japan, with 16 games for the hybrid console in the top-20, and only Kingdom Hearts 3 holding up the PS4 flag in the top-5.

That being said, a few core games keep selling better on PS4 despite the fact that the Switch has passed Sony’s console’s installed base in the country back in May.

That’s likely due to Switch users purchasing the console primarily for first-party games, and exclusives usually getting the best real estate both on the shelves and in marketing.

With the next generation coming soon, it’ll be interesting to see where the local market will land, but Nintendo certainly shined in its home turf in 2019.

Proud weeb hailing from sunny (not as much as people think) Italy and long-standing gamer since the age of Mattel Intellivision and Sinclair ZX Spectrum. Definitely a multi-platform gamer, he still holds the old dear PC nearest to his heart, while not disregarding any console on the market. RPGs (of any nationality), MMORPGs, and visual novels are his daily bread, but he enjoys almost every other genre, prominently racing simulators, action and sandbox games. He is also one of the few surviving fans on Earth of the flight simulator genre.
