Resident Evil 2
If, for some reason, you haven’t already checked out Capcom’s fantastic remake of Resident Evil 2, Halloween is the perfect time to do so.
This is a full-on remake of the 1998 PS1 classic game, following protagonists Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield as they explore Raccoon City, searching for a way out of the zombie-infested hellhole.
Even if you’ve played the original game, this is still very much worth checking out. Puzzles are different, the RPD layout has been shuffled ever so slightly, and the story and characters have been fleshed out significantly as well. And if you’re looking for a healthy dose of spooky jump scares, Resident Evil 2’s got you covered.
Moons of Madness
If you’re looking for something beyond just ghosts and ghouls, Moons of Madness might be the Halloween 2019 game for you.
Featuring a sci-fi setting, you play Shane Newhart, an engineer at a space station designed to decipher a mysterious message from Mars. It’s just another regular day at work as you wait for another team to take over your duties, but before long, weird stuff starts happening.
Moons of Madness deals with cosmic horror, drawing inspiration from Lovecraftian works, so if you’re into the whole psychological descent into madness, this is one to check out.
Layers of Fear 2
As a follow-up to the incredibly spooky and scary Layers of Fear, the sequel does fall short in a few ways, but it still provides an eerie experience that would fit in perfectly with the Halloween season.
Whereas the first game put you in the shoes of a tormented artist, Layers of Fear 2 puts you in the mind of an actor who can’t tell the difference between dream and reality any longer.
And just like in the first game, you’ll have to explore your environments to learn more about your character and their psyche. Layers of Fear 2 delves deep into the genre of psychological horror, and it’s definitely not for the faint of heart.
Blair Witch
Released just a couple months ago, Blair Witch is a first-person horror game that puts you in the shoes of Ellis Lynch, a veteran and former police officer. In this game, you’re tasked with looking for a missing boy in the Black Hills forest, and as you might expect, spooky things happen.
What’s interesting about Blair Witch is that it introduces some fascinating gameplay mechanics like the ability to rewind and manipulate time in certain situations in order to progress through the story. This is a fairly short game as well, but it’s quite replayable due to the different endings you can get.
Luigi’s Mansion 3
Switching gears for a bit here, Luigi’s Mansion 3 is another awesome game to play during the Halloween season.
The game takes us back into another spooky mansion where Luigi is armed with nothing but a flashlight and a vacuum for him to suck up ghosts, and ducks.
Making a return to Luigi’s Mansion 3 is Gooigi, who is basically a green goo version of Luigi, and is necessary for solving some environmental puzzles in the game. It’s certainly not a spooky game in the traditional sense of the word, but still, it’s a great Halloween pick for the kids.
