Final Fantasy XIV Moonfire Faire

If you haven’t played Final Fantasy XIV in a while and want to get back into the game, Square Enix has a proposition for you.

Today, Square Enix announced a six day-long, unlimited playtime free login campaign for Final Fantasy XIV. Anyone whose subscription has been inactive for more than thirty days can log in until August 16th without worrying about a subscription fee.

Players can reconnect with old friends who still play Final Fantasy XIV, pick up the story where they left off, and take part in special events. In fact, it’s no coincidence the free login campaign coincides with the seasonal Moonfire Faire event. Square Enix clearly wants as many players level 30 and up to join the Japanese-themed festivities.

Since the login campaign is available to anyone who hasn’t played Final Fantasy XIV in over a month, you might wonder if they will be allowed to experience the new expansion, Shadowbringers, during their free game time. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the wording of the press release implies that the expansion is a separate purchase, so players who login without an active subscription can’t try the new class, races, and story that come with the expansion.

Most free trials come with a few caveats, and Final Fantasy XIV’s free trial campaign is no exception. Aside from the aforementioned “only available to subscriptions that have been inactive for more than 30 days” qualifier, players also can’t participate if they use multiple service accounts and at least one of those accounts is still active. Moreover, players whose accounts were canceled or suspended for violating the terms of service are ineligible for the trial, and anyone who purchases a subscription during the free trial period forfeits the rest of their free game time.

If you never played Final Fantasy XIV before, though, you can still participate in the free trial campaign (sort of), so don’t worry. The base game minus the expansions is free for new players up to level 35, which means newcomers who want to participate in the Moonfire Faire can still join in free of charge.
