Best Destiny 2 Gambit Prime Subclasses, All 9 Ranked
Best Gambit Prime Subclasses in Destiny 2
9: Arcstrider

Let’s start this list off by saying, the best subclass to use in Gambit Prime is whichever one you play best with. Ultimately, the subclasses in Destiny 2 are pretty well-balanced, and skill and proficiency with a class is way more important to success than just stacking whatever subclass is in vogue.
That said, some subclasses have it easier than others, so here are our picks for the best Gambit Prime subclasses in Destiny 2.
The Arcstrider is absolutely viable in Gambit Prime, it is just is the most generic of all the subclasses in this mode, and lacks unique utility as compared to the rest.
Arcstriders are a good fit as both a collector, and a defensive minded Invader that prefers to get in close rather than using long-range weapons. Their Whirling Guard super gives them a unique niche of being able to dive into dangerous territory to either collect motes, or cross the map while invading.
Of course, too, they can use their regular ability kit to thrash enemies and smack bosses upside the head, but again, it’s not something that other subclasses can’t also do.

8: Striker

The Striker is fearsome in a few specific scenarios in Gambit Prime. Namely, it can absolutely wreck an entire team in an instant while invading in the primeval phase.
Unlike the vanilla version, in Gambit Prime the opposing team is often clustered together near where the pool of light spawns during the damage phase.
This is prime picking for a Striker that can spawn in and erase an entire team from the map either with Fist of Havoc or from downtown with Thundercrash.
Also, because the Striker’s super is so mobile, it’s also a great choice for running around and quickly stamping out the now squishier envoys.
This goes double for clearing out trash enemies and collecting motes, provided you’re able to effectively use all of the Striker’s toys effectively, such as Code of the Missile’s Ballistic Slam.
However, outside of these scenarios, the Striker lacks anything unique that would set it apart from the the rest of the subclasses.
Basically, it comes down to this: pick the Striker if that’s the subclass you’re most comfortable with, and can leverage its abilities, but if you have options, there other subclasses that can do what the Striker does well too, but also offer some perks that would be especially helpful in Gambit Prime.

7: Dawnblade

Skilled Dawnblade players can make good use of their “combat medic” like abilities offered in the middle skill tree from Forsaken. Stick to the reaper/collector with Attunement of Grace, and help keep the team moving at brisk pace.
Dropping the super on top of the bank can make clearing out Taken much easier too, making Dawnblade a good Sentry option as well. Although Invaders can still power through with the right weapons/abilities, it doesn’t hurt to have Well of Radiance nearby while attacking the boss either.
As an Invader, the offensive Dawnblade kits are actually surprisingly effective on the new Gambit Prime maps. If you’re good at getting the swords around obstacles, you can catch people that other supers would have a hard time reaching.
However, Dawnblade only shines bright with solid coordination from your teammates, and for the average player reading this, it might not be for you.
So if you’re playing with random people, you might find it easier just to go with another subclass like Voidwalker, which allows you to just buff yourself up at least to maximum efficiency to try and overcome terrible teammates.

6: Defender

The Defender lacks the pure offensive capability of the Striker but it makes up for it in utility and survivability.
The Defender is arguably one of the best collectors in Gambit Prime. It has a lot of abilities in its toolkit to give it a defensive edge, such as Defensive Strike, and allow it to safely navigate some of the most dangerous parts of the field in order to collect those wonderful motes of dark that the drifter is so fond of.
There’s also, of course, Banner Shield, which can not only assist with upping the damage of your team, but can shield teammates from invader fire while DPSing the primeval.
Also, although it’s a little crazy, if the situation called for it, the Defender could use its Ward of Dawn ability to create a safe space over the pool of light in order to totally shield the team from an Invader and protect your team from getting flanked into oblivion.

5: Gunslinger

Even after a nerf to Blade Barrage, Gunslinger is still a force to be reckoned with in Gambit Prime. For one, yes Blade Barrage is still pretty good, it’s just not as broken as it used to be.
Pop it on a primeval for some instant, safe and heavy damage; or use it on an envoy to melt it, and anything else around it, pretty much instantly.
Blade Barrage can also make quick work of guardians as an invader, and because of how quick it is, it can save you from getting sent back home early if someone gets the jump on you.
Of course, you can use the new buffed Golden Gun instead if you feel comfortable roaming, allowing you to get even more invader kills from a safer distance.
Gunslinger’s only draw back is that, outside of your super, the utility drops off a bit compared to other subclasses that have some more versatility to it. The next subclass is a prime example of this.

4: Voidwalker

The Voidwalker is a great all around Gambit Prime class that can do a lot of jobs on the battlefield. With a Devour build, the Voidwalker is an extremely self-sufficient tank that can both reap and collect.
With the Nova Bomb buff, the Voidwalker’s boss damage is also much better. Wait until the boss is softened up with a few envoy kills and drop a nuke on it. Or, you could save it for when the bank is flooded with blockers and bring down the whole house in one fell swoop.
Finally, while Nova Warp isn’t nearly as strong as it used to be, it’s still a viable option for Invaders too. The increased mobility allows it to get into the face of opposing guardians easier than a lot of other roaming supers and can still devastate an unexpecting team with a flank.

3: Sunbreaker

Thanks to good ol’ Hammer Strike (AKA Melting Point), Sunbreaker remains a stalwart towards the top of any PvE-related list. Anytime you have a pesky major that is giving you a hard time, Hammer Striker can set them up to be evaporated by yourself or a teammate. The usefulness of this can’t be overstated.
There’s, of course, Hammer of Sol, which is great as both an add clearer and an invasion super. Anything that’s not a super tanky enemy will be brought down quite quickly by it, and it can do decent damage to a primeval if you don’t have a strong heavy weapon handy.
And, if you wanted to go for a full reaper/collector build (say if you have someone else already running the above, you usually don’t need two), the middle/bottom code both offer more offensive-minded abilities that are great for clearing out weak groups of enemies very fast.

2: Stormcaller

Chaos Reach is pound for pound one of the best boss melting supers in the game. Few, if any, subclasses can compete with the Stormcaller in this regard.
So, while other classes like the Striker can clear out opposing guardians and enemies better, and the Sunbreaker/Nightstalker offer up more utility with some of their kits, it’s always helpful to have a Stormcaller on the team to just melt the face off the primeval. Someone has to DPS the boss, and it might as well be you.
It really is as simple as that. If Chaos Reach was nerfed, Stormcaller would still be pretty effective as an add clearer, and DPS buffer with Arc Soul… but it’s not nerfed yet, as of this writing. So while Stormcaller might be kind of a one-trick pony right now, it’s a pretty damn good trick.

1: Nightstalker

Nightstalker is our top pick as the best subclass in Gambit Prime thanks to its ability to not only be the most useful support class on a team, but also a fearsome invader too, depending on your choice of skill tree.
Shadowshot is still one of the best supers in the game, and there’s nothing that can compete with it in terms of neutralizing an extremely hard to break enemy position and turning it into a cake walk, all while generating a bunch of orbs and additional super energy in the process.
You can lock down a bank filled with Taken, and also make the primeval softer to beat up on. Or, if you’re really skilled, use it to spot an Invader in their tracks and avoid any game-changing primeval healing.
The Nightstalker also has great defensive utility with its invisibility tricks, and if you opt for the middle tree, you can be a force as an invader too. While it’s not the strongest and quickest TTK, running around as a purple smoke person is a lot more incognito than having a big red blob around you.
There’s really nothing the Nightstalker can’t do in Gambit Prime and that’s why its our number one best Gambit Prime subclass in Destiny 2.
