Difference Between Retro and Modern Mode in Crash 4

Upon booting up a new game, Crash 4 players will be given a choice between two modes: Retro and Modern. The choice isn’t permanent and can be changed in the options menu, but if you are currently playing a level, you will need to start it over.

In Retro mode, you get the old school Crash experience: You have a set number of lives with which to make it through a given level, and running out means starting the level over entirely.

There are still checkpoints, and extra lives can be gained by smashing specially marked Crash crates or earning 100 Wumpa Fruit, but this is definitely a harder way of playing, and one that some might find frustrating.

In Modern mode, you get a more forgiving experience, in that you can never run out of lives, and if you die you will simply start at the nearest checkpoint (or the beginning of the level, if you haven’t yet reached one).

While this may make for a smoother playthrough overall, it also somewhat lessens the importance of Wumpa Fruit. In Modern mode, if you aren’t trying for 100% completion and to earn each level Gems, there is little reason to pick them up at all.

There is no right or wrong way to play, so pick whichever sounds more fun to you. The game is well balanced to accommodate either play style and it’s pretty cool that players can customize their experience in such a meaningful way.

That’s everything you need to know about the difference between Retro and Modern mode in Crash 4. For all the latest regarding the Bandicoot himself, we’ve got you covered right here.
