SMT Strange Journey Redux: How to Talk and Recruit Demons

Talking and Recruiting Demons in SMT: Strange Journey Redux

Recommended Videos

Just like past games in the Shin Megami Tensei series, the talking and recruiting system is still present in Strange Journey Redux. If you want to get stronger in the game, you can’t just rely on hard grinding and raising your character level. You have to recruit demons to your cause to unlock new fusion possibilities as well. In order to do that, you’re going to need to make use of the Talk function.

Whenever you get into a combat encounter in a dungeon, instead of selecting the Combat option on your screen, select Talk instead. You can then choose which demon you want to talk to. Do note that demons will refuse to talk to you during a full moon, though you can develop a Sub App later on in the game to bypass that limitation. Most demons will agree to talk, though it’s also worth noting that your chances of getting them to like you will vary depending on their alignment and your own. For instance, some demons that are too aligned with Chaos might refuse to talk to you if you’re Neutral or Law. In most cases, even if your alignments are different, some might still talk to you, though it will be a little harder to please them in conversation.

You’ll have two dialogue checks in each conversation. If you manage to please them twice, you’ll be able to start a negotiation to ask for either an item, Macca, or for them to become your demon. If you fail a check, there’s a chance that the demon might leave the battle entirely or attack you straightaway. There’s also a small chance for them to overlook your transgression, allowing you to move on to the second dialogue check. Another thing to note is that once you pass both checks, you can choose to remain silent or start a negotiation. Some demons might find you annoying if you start a negotiation and would prefer that you remain silent. In our experience, we got a lot of success from simply starting the negotiation by selecting that option.

If you ask them to become your demon, they’ll make a few demands. They’ll usually ask for a Life Stone, money, and even suck some of your HP and MP. Just keep giving them what they want (as best as you can) and they’ll eventually join you. If you refuse them too many times, they’ll take offense.

While conversing with a demon, take note of their alignment and personality types to try to select the best dialogue option that would make them happy.

That’s all you need to know about how to talk to and recruit demons in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux. Be sure to search for Twinfinite for more tips and tricks.
