Vampyr
Best PS4 Games in June 2018
Vampyr is a big deviation from Dontnod’s previous games, the likes of Life is Strange and Remember Me. However, it’s a game with a fascinating setting that could easily be one of the sleeper hits of the year. Vampyr is set in 1918 London during the outbreak of the Spanish flu pandemic. You play as Jonathan E. Reid, a doctor who’s turned into a vampire and discovers a shocking supernatural world.
The game’s mechanics play right into the idea of being a vampire, and you even have the ability to turn other inhabitants into vampires. London serves as a semi-open world with four interlinking areas, and a wealth of people and creatures to get to know, and kill. Jonathan has to take down different targets in the game, getting to know their daily routines and habits, while collecting clues and investigating the larger mystery of the game. There’s a ton of choice involved in Vampyr, with every choice you make directly shaping the outcome of the story. You can even make it through the game without killing any of the major NPCs, though it’ll severely limit your experience to use on abilities, which is mostly gained through blood.
Vampyr seems like a an intruiging cross-over between story/adventure games and action-RPGs, and if its ambitions really pay off it could be one to nab this month.
