Monster Hunter World: What the Best Greatsword Is

Best Greatsword in Monster Hunter World

The Greatsword weapon type is perfect for anyone who just loves raw damage output in Monster Hunter World. It might be heavy and somewhat slow, but it has fantastic stagger potential. And, well, it just looks badass. It’s not a very newcomer-friendly weapon, but we definitely recommend it once you’ve gotten a hang of the game’s combat systems.

At the start of the game, when you’re still working your way through the low rank hunts, the Ore upgrade tree is a pretty safe bet to go with. However, it won’t be long before you unlock the Jagras upgrade tree, which we feel is much more efficient for damage output, not to mention the fact that it has pretty low resource requirements and is rather easy to make. If you want, the Jagras Greatsword could even carry you to the end of the game, though we still recommend having a variety of Greatswords with different elemental types in case the need arises.

For Greatswords, you generally don’t need to worry too much about status effects or affinity, so feel free to go with whichever tree appeals to your play style the most.

Once you get to the end game content, though, the Nergigante upgrade tree is definitely the way to go. Like most of the other weapon types in the game, the Nergigante tree gives you great damage output, sharpness, and is extremely useful for hunting down the game’s toughest monsters. You’ll probably need to spend a bit of time farming for parts, but it’ll be worth it.
