The Best Game of November 2017: Call of Duty: WWII

Call of Duty: WWII

News Editor Brittany Vincent: For the last few years, the Call of Duty series opted to look to the future instead of the past for its frenetic brand of first-person shooter. This year, Sledgehammer Games took it back to the past and the series’ roots in World War II with Call of Duty: WWII. It simultaneously offered a somber and serious look at the war through the eyes of relatable protagonists with some seriously heart-pounding moments for its single-player campaign, and a rollicking multiplayer mode that both streamlined and expanded upon the series’ previous endeavors. Despite somewhat kitschy and silly microtransaction decisions and growing pains with online multiplayer, it delivered a complete experience for anyone looking for the cinematic quality of a Call of Duty game with the sincerity of a war flick.

It also managed to revamp the Call of Duty: Zombies franchise in one of the best ways possible since the series’ debut in Call of Duty: World at War, doffing the B-movie schlock of the previous installments and heading down a road that’s not unlike the shock-horror flick Frankenstein’s Army. With grotesque monsters and experiments roaming around, the Zombies mode calls to mind some of the most terrifying horror movies around rather than Elvira and a bunch of teenagers screaming and running for their lives.

These three parts combined to make a Call of Duty game that was well worth the wait, and a welcome return to an era that made the original game such an excellent one to begin with.

That does it for our November 2017 Game of the Month. Congratulations to Call of Duty: WWII! What do you think were the best games from last month? Let us know in the comments.
