EA Implies Star Wars Battlefront II’s Microtransactions Will Return

But not until they’ve been re-balanced.

Yesterday brought the surprise news that, in response to intense consumer backlash, Electronic Arts was removing Star Wars Battlefront II microtransactions just hours before the game launched. It wasn’t entirely clear at the time if or when the microtransactions could return and in what form, but an EA representative has now implied they will be coming back after being re-balanced.

Speaking to US Gamer, the representative said the developers at DICE are going “back to the drawing board” in an attempt to improve the system. The representative added that the idea is to find a solution that balances the needs of Battlefront’s large player base.

To that end, EA believes that a portion of players want an “accelerated experience,” meaning the microtransaction system that allows players to use real-world money to buy “accelerators” that offer gameplay boosts. But therein lies the problem, as what seems to be a larger portion of players was none too happy with a system it perceives as being “pay to win.” Case in point: a recent EA comment on the system infamously became Reddit’s most downvoted comment of all time.

The representative wouldn’t or couldn’t at this time offer any details as to how the system will be changed. Whatever EA is planning, though, it would seem to involve the return of Battlefront II’s accelerator microtransactions at some point.

Star Wars Battlefront II released today for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
